Hawks struggle in Mendo, host Clark Classic this week

The 2012-2013 Cosumnes River College men’s basketball team kicks off its campaign at home this week, as they host the 34th Annual James Clark Invitational, which opens Thursday and runs through Saturday.  The tournament once again boasts a diverse field, as five different conferences, and contrasting styles of play are represented in the tournament. Returning to the event will be Chabot College of Hayward, Columbia College of Sonora, Feather River College of Quincy, Merced Junior College, Modesto Junior College, Napa Valley College and Porterville College. The double-elimination style event kicks off tomorrow at 2 PM, with games to follow at 4, 6 and 8 PM. The Hawks will host Merced Junior College in their home opener tomorrow at 6.  CRC defeated Chabot College last season in the 3rd place game, 93-77.

The Hawks look to improve after a disappointing 1-2 showing at the Ed Boyle Classic at Mendocino College in Ukiah. Cosumnes River played well in the opening game against Butte, taking control for the majority of the contest. Butte mounted a strong comeback in the second half, eventually taking the lead late in the contest. However, Miguel French (Lindhurst HS/Marysville) hit what would prove to be the game winner from the short corner with 0.6 seconds remaining, to give the Hawks the 69-68 victory. Charles Standifer (Capital Christian HS/Sacramento) led all scorers with 30 points, while also contributing nine rebounds.

Things proved more difficult in the second game against host Mendocino College.  The Hawks struggled defensively for most of the contest, getting in foul trouble early. CRC closed the deficit to one point late in the second half, but the shorthanded Hawks ran out of gas, falling 74-65.  Standifer once again led all scorers with 32 points in the effort.  The youth and inexperience of the CRC roster was also on display in the third contest against Bay Valley conference foe Los Medanos. The Hawks stormed out of the gates, taking a 36-18 advantage midway through the first half. The defensive pressure bothered CRC down the stretch however, as the Mustangs managed to rally back to close the deficit to single digits heading into the second half. The lead changed hands several times throughout the second half, before the Mustangs pulled away late.  Rodney Cook (Bethel HS/Vallejo) closed the gap with consecutive three point baskets, but it was too little too late, as CRC fell to LMC 69-65 in the 3rd place game. Cook and Standifer paced the Hawks offense with 12 points apiece.

Cosumnes River (1-2) looks to improve this week as they host Merced Junior College (0-5) in their home opener during the first round of the 34th Annual James Clark Classic. Tipoff is tentatively scheduled for 6 PM. Opening round matchups are scheduled as follows:

Thursday November 29

Columbia Claim Jumpers vs Napa Valley Storm @ 2 PM

Modesto JC Pirates vs Porterville Pirates @ 4 PM

Cosumnes River Hawks vs Merced Blue Devils @ 6 PM

Chabot Gladiators vs Feather River Golden Eagles @ 8 PM

Hartnell 91, Las Positas 81

Hartnell College proved to be 10 points better than Las Positas College, 91-81.

Billy Giles 10 0-0 21 (plus nine rebounds)
Michael Salazar 4 9-10 20 (three treys)

Culture Counts! - Greg Clink

Chico State Coach Greg Clink has his second DVD out -- his first was: "Crunch Time Playbook: Great Ways To Score With Limited Time" -- and this new one is titled "Culture Counts! Principles and Ideas for Building a Championship Environment."

It runs 40 minutes, with Clink speaking to the camera about his 10 principles for developing and maintaining a great culture within an organization.

So what is culture? Let's go with the dictionary definition of "the attitudes, feelings, values, and behavior that characterize and inform society as a whole or any social group within it."

Now it's true that culture can breed both success and failure.

Get it right and team performance soars, with the whole often succeeding the sum of the individual parts.

But failing in this venture, or simply ignoring culture altogether, and the road to success is full of unattended potholes. It can also force all to live in energy-sapping, day-to-day crisis mode that breeds reaction, not pro-action.

Yes, diligence with X's and O's is important for coaching success in any sport. The ability to recruit is similarly imperative. Nobody can successfully argue against these premises.

But the processes that create the best cultural environment for teaching and learning requires a top-to-bottom genuine desire-to-learn attitude and a willingness to act unselfishly. Such draws the best out of people and is an coveted atmosphere.

As Clink stresses, such requires a people-first mindset in all areas of life, a treat-people-right mentality. But it also sometimes requires respectful "brutal honesty" and a willingness to "confront the snowball before it becomes an avalanche."

In the video, Clink covers the vision of what he wanted when he took over the head coaching spot at Chico four years ago and how he went about, developed and enhanced that culture. He talks about getting the right people, both as assistants and student-athletes -- high character, hardworking, honest role models as building blocks.

It's fascinating material, applicable all across the human interaction spectrum.

So what's your vision for yourself as an individual or the entity you head or work for, and how do you plan on reaching that goal?

"Culture Counts! Principles and Ideas for Building a Championship Environment" can help. There once was "the HP way" and this is the Chico State basketball way.

The DVD can be purchased here.

The 6-foot-2 Freeberg is shooting 50% on the season, scoring 9.8 points and grabbing 4.3 rebounds.

Neves is at 44% shooting, with 2.8 points, 4.3 assists and 4.8 rebounds a contest.

Backcourter Dylan Garrity contributed 16 points while freshman Cody Demps posted eight points and four boards in just 18 minutes of court time.

For Dominican, senior frontcourter Jacob Noisat enjoyed a 12/7 night.

Bryan Metcalf game reports.

Lee posts a D/D

Casper College took down Western Nebraska last night with Dominique Lee posted a double-double of 22 points and 12 rebounds.

Will some coach get him back to CA, please?

A Tomas Sanchez update

Backcourter Thomas Sanchez plied his play on Fresno City College's state championship team to a scholarship with Idaho State of the Big Sky Conference.

In five games so far this season with the Bengals, Sanchez is averaging 7.2 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists per contest, shooting 43% overall, 40% from long distance and a perfect 14-14 from the foul line.

Jay Bilas: let's expand the boxscore

Gotta love this Jay Bilas idea (but who makes the official call?): "I'd like hoop box scores to include "bad shots" as a category, like turnovers. We don't have as many bad shooters as bad decision makers."

Thompson ready to soar

 David Steutel photo

Brandon Thompson certainly fits the mold of today's player -- powerful, sleek, athletic and able to play multiple roles on the floor.

Entering his junior season at Christian Brothers High in Sacramento with a year as a basketball starter behind him, the 6-foot-4 Thompson is looking forward to a breakout season and leading his Falcon teammates to greater success.

He finished up in November playing football as a wide receiver and safety and time participating in track will come in the spring. For the present, it's all roundball.

Asked to name his best skills, Thompson offered "attacking the hoop and my improved mid-range jumpshot." Conversely, what he's working on is "getting stronger with my left hand."

As for a sport preference, he said, "I enjoy the sport I am playing at the time but I've been playing basketball since I was three or four years old."

Thompson believes basketball will be his college sport and early feedback indicates he'll be positioned at the two and three spots.

Also an original Team Sage member for Coach Wornel Simpson, Thompson impressed with his play this past spring and summer. Columbia recently initiated contact.

Here's Simpson: "Brandon is obviously intelligent and a hard worker.  He's also very personable, well-spoken and any university would be well-represented not only by his athletic talent on the field, but by the way he conducts himself as a professional off the court. Brandon's ability to blend in to any team concept, play multiple positions and tirelessly work toward improving and winning has endeared him to his teammates. He is a quick study with a calm demeanor and is a coach's dream."

Despite his playing three varsity sports in high school, Thompson maintains a 3.5 grade point average and wants to major in kinesiology.

"I see myself working as a trainer for a high school, college or pro team."

His best moment on the court to date? "Probably dunking the first time. It was a scrimmage game at school and I came in on the basket so I thought I might as well dunk it."

Thompson cited many as basketball influences but first and foremost, he's all in as a LeBron man. Something about powerful and athletic.

Henry Wofford/CSNBayArea serves up a video feature with De'End Parker, now at USF.

Sankey does it again

Host Lipscomb battled but Murray State was just too much to the tune of 88-79 last night. But former Newark Memorial High talent Khion Sankey enjoyed another stats stuffing night with 12 rebounds, eight points and six assists for Lipscomb.

Williams stars again

Christian (Sierra High) Williams scored 22 points but it wasn't enough as Jackson State fell 84-75 to host Texas Tech last night. The senior backcourter shot 6-14 from three-point range and and pilfered five steals.

In Bruce Pascoe's latest article, Arizona Coach Sean Miller figuratively sings the praises of freshman Brandon Ashley.

Williams carries Wagner

Albany topped Wagner 66-63 last night despite a powerful effort from former CCSF star Jonathan Williams. The senior scored 26 points (10-11 overall shooting, 6-6 from the foul line) and grabbed seven rebounds.

Keith Schlosser writes about how James Nunnally is impressing in the NBA Developmental League.

Albright name CCAA POW

San Francisco State's James Albright has been named the Wilson/California Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 19-25.

The senior forward led the Gators' to a 2-0 at the Carl's Jr. Mac Martin Invitational in Chico, Calif., this past weekend.  Albright was named the Tournament MVP after averaging 17.5 points per game.  He shot 70 percent (14-for-20) from the paint and 50 percent from the arch, and was perfect from the free-throw line, making six-for-six on the weekend.

Albright started off the weekend scoring a team high 14 points while shooting 5-of-8 from the field a perfect four-for-four from the charity stripe in the Gators' 60-55 win over No. 7 Seattle Pacific on Friday evening.

Then on Saturday, the Oakland, Calif., native scored a season high 21 points, grabbing four rebounds and dishing out one assist in SF State's come-from-behind 69-66 win over UC-Colorado Springs on Saturday evening. Albright was 9-for-12 from the field including making his only three-point field goal attempt while connecting on both of his attempts from the charity stripe.

For the season, Albright is averaging 10.8 points per game while shooting 54.5% from the field.

The Gators chomped the opposition this weekend

San Francisco State enjoyed a bountiful basketball weekend, first topping Seattle Pacific 60-55 and then dropping UC Colorado Springs 69-66 at a tournament up in Chico.

Gator athletics has all the details as a trio of Coach Paul Trevor's team were honored for their respective play.

The Wildcats fall

But senior backcourter Damario (McClymonds High) Sims did make the all-tourney team.

Goins powers Coyotes to win

It was Cal State San Bernardino 90 to UC San Diego's 82 Saturday night as former Diablo Valley College backcourter Brian Goins tallied a team-leading 23 points (9-16 shooting), four assists and three steals for the victors.

Senior Justin (Bishop O'Dowd) Brue totaled 24 points (12-16 shooting) for the Tritons and also nabbed nine rebounds.

Tillman produces but CSLA still falls

James Tillman's 23 points led Cal State Los Angeles but the Golden Eagles still fell to California Baptist 77-70 in overtime on Saturday. The former Consumnes River wing also had three blocked shots and passed for a trio of assists.

Harris leads Concordia

Concordia topped Warner Pacific 84-78 on Saturday with former Valley Christian star Tim Harris scoring 19 points.

An Eli Holman update

Former Richmond High big Eli Holman is playing in Israel right now for Hapoel Eliat and through seven games in averaging 13 points and 10.8 rebounds a contest, shooting 55% overall and 67% at the free throw line.

Akognon starts out strong

In Josh Akognon's first game for Liaoning, his new team in China, he poured in 46 points (17-25 overall shooting, 8-13 on three-pointers) in a win.

Dominican University fell to Cal State Monterey Bay 73-68 on Saturday despite four players in double figures. DU athletics has the game report.

St. Mary's falls again

St. Mary's fell again, this time to Georgia Tech 65-56 on Sunday as Brad Waldow posted a line of seven boards and five points. He's shooting 61% for the season but pretty much been it on the inside for Coach Randy Bennett.

Raphielle Johnson writes about this season's Gaels, particularly the paint players.

Regarding those bigs, 6-foot-11 Matt Hofgson is getting back on the court after two seasons at Southern Utah and then a redshirt year. 6-foot-9 Mitchell Young isn't a back-to-the-basket guy. 7-foot Kyle Rowley looks to be more of a backup type. A double-double type, a la Rob Jones doesn't appear to reside in this group. Waldow is the best of the bunch but another needs to emerge.

Pappageorge leads Long Beach State

Peter (Burlingame High/Cañada College) Pappageorge scored a team-leading 23 points to lead Long Beach State to a 69-61 Sunday victory over host Fresno State on Sunday. The senior backcourter shot 6-10 overall, 4-8 from long distance and 7-7 at the foul line.

On the flip side, Jerry (Sacred Heart Cathedral) Brown went for nine points plus eight boards for the Bulldogs. Tyler (St. Francis High) Johnson added 10 points.

High impressed in several ways. A skinny athlete, Hornsby has a good skill level, shoots with good range and has some athleticism around the rim. At a minimum, he's a good mid-major prospect but with added strength and a little more game off the dribble, he could have more upside than that."
