Going dark this weekend
Going to be light to non-existent posting this holiday weekend -- will be working on some features for this site.
Gomez adding working at USF to his résumé
Mario Gomez, the Director of Operations for Coach Justin Labagh's City College of San Francisco basketball entity of late, is now an operations video intern at USF, working for Coach Jennifer Azzi and her women's hoops program.
For some background, Azzi is a Stanford graduate who counts a national championship (1990) and an Olympic gold medal (1996) among her professional achievements.
Now entering the last semester of his Recreation Administration program at San Francisco State University, Gomez wanted to broaden his experience by adding some local DI experience to his skills set.
His tasks will be assisting the coaching staff by editing film of upcoming opponents, handling recruiting mailouts and miscellaneous other duties.
Here's a previous feature on Gomez.

Do read T.D. Williams article
T.D. Williams is amazing insightful with his article: "The Perils of Selective Decency."
A snippet:
...ESPN long ago decided complex, sensitive social issues were grist for the ratings mill. It wouldn’t have taken more than minimal coordinating to get someone on air to articulate a comprehensive, informed viewpoint on Ray Rice’s suspension as it related to larger societal discourse on domestic abuse and misogyny. The network, though, rarely demonstrates interest in comprehensive, informed viewpoints, instead attempting to reduce even complex and sensitive social issues to an easily digestible highlight clip. Ergo, Smith was given his long, dangerous leash, and it was impossible to then set aside skepticism when network higher-ups expressed surprise and disappointment that he inevitably got tangled in it and started to choke...
One theme of his continues the long-deserved calling out of ESPN for its not so benign neglect of anything beyond highlights of home runs, winning goals, slam dunks and sprints to touchdowns. Sports doesn't take place in a vacuum, nothing does. But who on the vast ESPN staff has the standing, let alone the background, to present complexity. Maybe Bob Ley if he is even still there. That's quite the indictment.

A Malik Pope update
Mark Zeigler provides an update on Malik Pope:
Malik Pope, a five-star forward, has been on campus since the second session of summer school but is still only allowed to shoot on the side while he continues rehab of his left leg, which he broke twice in high school.
“Malik is rehabbing very aggressively,” (San Diego State Coach Steve) Fisher said. “We’re being ultra-cautious with him. He has not done anything other than shoot. I have no timetable for him. We’ll just inch him along a little more.”

Fulton moving over to the boys side
From the Marin Independent Journal:
San Domenico School girls basketball coach Mike Fulton has been named the director of basketball operations for the San Anselmo school.
Under Fulton's guidance, the San Domenico varsity girls team has been ranked as high as No. 7 in the state for Division V last season. The Panthers won the Bay Counties League crown in 2013 and have competed in the North Coast Section and state playoffs the past three seasons.
In his new role, Fulton will lead the development of the San Domenico boys varsity and JV basketball program, which begins with its first ninth and 10th grade classes next fall.

The 2010 Bay Area Competition Clinic
No, you haven't been transported into some sort of time machine. We are going to revisit the talents listed under the top prospects who participated in the 2010 Bay Area Competition Clinic and their respective analyses because it's always fascinating to see where they are now.
TOP PROSPECTS:
6’4 SF Dylan Alexander 2013 of Weston Ranch HS, Stockton (Independent #1)
Alexander was one of the pleasant surprises of the event who played very well. He is a deceptively athletic wing who is a capable handler and passer. He has a nice first step and gets to the basket consistently. He’s also a good shooter with three-point range. This is a definitely a name to put on the radar for college coaches in the class of 2013.
* He walked on at San Jose State University as a freshman and is now spending his sophomore season at Casper College in Wyoming.
6’4 SF Noah Allen 2013 of Palma HS, Salinas
Allen has a real nice combination of athleticism and skill. He’s a long-armed wing who can handle and pass it fairly well. He has a nice first step and can get to the basket. He can also pull up in the half court quite well. He shoots it with a lot of confidence and is a solid rebounder. A definite division I player from the class of 2013.
* Allen didn't play much as a UCLA freshman but looks like he will be a four-year Bruin who should be getting on the court more as an upperclassman.
6’7 PF/SF David Andoh 2012 of St. Mary’s HS, Berkeley
Andoh is a fairly athletic combo forward who is a nice all-around scorer. He can break down a defender one on one and has a nice mid-range game. He can score on the block some but prefers to play facing the basket. He is also a solid rebounder. Andoh has a nice game but just needs to learn to focus better in order to develop into a consistent player who maximizes his talents.
* He spent his freshman year at San Jose State University and his sophomore one at Merritt College. Andoh is now at Liberty University in Virginia as a junior.
6’3 SG/PG Glenn Baral 2012 of St. Mary’s HS, Berkeley
Baral is a combo guard who has nice skills and plays with a lot of confidence. He is a solid handler and has a nice hesitation move from the wing. He also pulls very nicely mid-range in the half court. He shoots it ok with three-point range. Baral will be a Division I player, it’s just a question of how high he ultimately goes.
* Baral is entering his sophomore year at Stetson University.
6’2 SF/PF Joe Barnes 2013 of Sacramento HS, Sacramento
Barnes is an athletic combo forward who runs the floor well. He is an ok ball handler and a good driver with a nice first step.
* He was a freshman at Cosumnes River College last year. Not sure where he is at for 2014-15.
6’5 PF/C Shon Briggs 2014 of Heritage HS, Antioch
Briggs sure doesn’t look or play like a freshman. He is a big-bodied combo postman who can score around the basket. He also has a nice one-bounce drive from the high post area. He is also a solid rebounder. Briggs is a very nice-looking young prospect with a bright future.
* Briggs is a freshman at Casper College in Wyoming.
6’0 SG Aaron Cameron 2013 of Sacramento HS, Sacramento (
Cameron is a fairly athletic two guard with nice skills. He handles it well and finishes in transition effectively. He is a good driver and he shoots fairly well with three-point range. Cameron is a nice all-around scorer who has the potential to be a mid major player.
* Cameron is a sophomore at Cal State East Bay.
5’9 PG/SG Demoriaye Hart-Spikes 2014 of St. Patrick-St. Vincent’s HS, Vallejo
Hart-Spikes was one of the bright young prospects in the event. He is a very athletic combo guard who finishes well in transition. He is a solid handler and passer. Most impressive is his ability to drive the ball to the basket. He has a nice first step and consistently breaks down the defender. Hart-Spikes shows tremendous promise in the class of 2014.
* Hart-Spikes is a freshman at Cosumnes River College.
6’1 SG Rae Jackson 2013 of Rodriguez HS, Fairfield
Jackson is an athletic shooting guard who was quite impressive in this event. He is a capable handler who runs the floor well and is real effective in transition. He pulls up very well, both on the break and in the half court. He is also a fairly good shooter with three-point range and a competitor. This is a new name on the radar that many college coaches will (and need to) become very familiar with real soon!
* Word is Jackson is at Chabot College but this is unconfirmed.
5’8 PG George Johnson 2013 of De La Salle HS, Concord
Johnson proved to be one of the more versatile players in the event. He is an athletic one man who can make plays in transition. He also pulls up well in the half court. He is a confident ball handler and knows how to run a team. Johnson shoots it ok with three-point range.
* Again, unconfirmed but last word is that Johnson is with the Academy of Art basketball program.
6’7 SF/PF Marcus Lee 2013 of Deer Valley HS, Antioch
Lee is a fairly athletic combo forward who prefers to play on the perimeter. He can handle and pass and pulls up effectively in transition. He shoots it fairly well and is a capable rebounder. Lee projects to be a mid major prospect.
* Lee is a sophomore at Kentucky and already getting mentioned as a member of upcoming NBA drafts.
5’10 PG Markel Leonard 2013 of Salesian HS, Richmond
Leonard is an athletic point guard who runs the floor well. He is a solid ball handler and a very good passer. He makes plays in transition and can pull up in the half court. He has a nice first step and can break down the defender.
* He transferred from Cal Poly and is now a sophomore at Santa Rosa Junior College.
6’1 PG/SG Bobby Sharp 2011 of Cardinal Newman HS, Santa Rosa
Sharp is a combo guard who possesses a unique combination of toughness and skill. He handles and passes it well and can run a team. He is a good shooter with three-point range and a capable defender and rebounder. Sharp sets himself apart from others with his competitive approach to the game.
* Sharp is a senior at Portland after spending two years at Santa Rosa Junior College.
5’8 PG Daylan West 2013 of Bishop O’Dowd HS, Oakland
West is a really athletic one man with nice speed and quickness. He is a solid handler, has a real nice first step and is a very effective penetrator.
* Unable to locate his status.

This also makes it appear that Gonzaga should trample unscathed through the WCC.

USF getting a prominent visit
Jerry Meyer reports that USF will have Nate Grimes in for a visit on September 17. He's a 6-foot-7 wing out of Las Vegas with the potential of becoming a go-to player collegiately. Saw him play in Vegas versus the Soldiers and he had his moments but was the sole frontcourter of note for his team surrounded by a bevy of talented opponents. It may be heresy to write this but he shows Paul George-like potential.

An opinion on Marcus Lee
From Ed Isaacson after Kentucky's trip to the Bahamas earlier this month:
Marcus Lee – There is no doubting Lee’s athleticism, and a lot of other teams would love his length in their frontcourt, but I really don’t see where Lee fits on this year’s team. He surprised some people with some big plays off the bench down the stretch last season, but other than catching dunks off of lobs or offensive rebounds, Lee hasn’t shown much in the skill department. With a frontcourt already crowded with more talented players, Lee will probably need another year to have a shot to show what he may be capable of.

CHABOT TRIFECTA headed to Pacific Union College!
Greg Brown, Cortez Barrett and Andrew Rice have all committed to Pacific Union College for the 2014-15 season. All three players were starters and major contributors in last years Final Four team that finished 25-8.
Greg Brown was a two time 1st Team All Conference team member in the tough Coast-North Conference. He originally hails from San Pedro, Ca. Hit the link for some footage from the State Semifinal victory over CCSF
Cortez Barrett came to Chabot as a transfer from Kansas City after being named 1st Team All Missouri in high school. He earned 1st Team All State Tournament in the California Community College playoffs after huge performances in the Gladiators run to the Final Four. Hit the link for some highlights of Barrett's stellar sophomore season below
Andrew Rice started most of the season at center for the Gladiators where he was a defensive force for Chabot. He should be a force in the Cal Pac Conference.
It was a tough decision for all three players, who each had several schools interested. In the end they wanted to stay together and stay in California. Coach Greg Rahn of Pacific Union did a great job recruiting this crew and should really make some noise this year. Pacific Union is an NAIA institution located in Angwin, California.
The threesome will get to play all around northern California as Pacific Union is in the same league as Cal Maritime, Menlo College, Simpson College and UC Merced.

Keating changes staff
Santa Clara Coach Kerry Keating has made a number of changes in his coaching and support staff:
Santa Clara head men's basketball coach Kerry Keating, entering his eighth year at the helm of the Broncos, announced three hiring's on Monday. For starters, Air Force Academy Associate Head Coach Steve Snell has been added to the Bronco coaching staff. He will replace first year assistant coach Kyle Schwan who returned to Arizona to work in private business.
"We are fortunate to be able to add Steve to our coaching staff," said Keating. "He is a seasoned veteran, a winner and a trusted coach that will have a great influence on our players here at Santa Clara."
"I am excited about joining the Bronco family," said Snell. "Coaching here gives me a great opportunity to work at a prestigious university in a great conference. It is honor to work for one of the best coaches on the west coast. It is a also a wonderful opportunity for me and my family. I am excited to get started."
In addition, Keating announced he has added Dana McCusker as the men's basketball academic counselor. The Broncos have also hired Evan Drabik, a graduate assistant the past two years at SCU, as a full-time men's basketball athletic trainer.
Snell was in his eighth season on the men's basketball staff at the Air Force Academy and second year as the associate head coach.
During his time at Air Force, the Falcons earned two postseason appearances at the CollegeInsider.com Tournament in 2011 and '13. Snell also helped Air Force claim three of its four victories over ranked teams in program history, including two wins over San Diego State and an 89-88 victory over 12th-ranked New Mexico in the 2013 regular-season finale. In addition, he played a vital role in Tim Anderson earning Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2008 and Michael Lyons becoming just the sixth player in program history to earn first-team all-conference honors in 2013.
A 24-year coaching veteran, Snell came to Air Force prior to the 2007-08 campaign after spending two seasons as a member of the coaching staff at Louisiana-Monroe. He helped the Warhawks to the co-championship of the Sun Belt's West Division in 2006-07 with an 18-14 record, including a perfect 14-0 mark at home. Prior to coaching at ULM, Snell was at Tulane University, where he served as an assistant coach. During his four-year tenure with the Green Wave, Snell assisted in all aspects of the program.

Another feature on playing overseas
Pete Strobl writes about his playing professional basketball overseas -- very good writing, actually from a book he published on his participation abroad.
An excerpt:
...Initially, I thought that my main focus should be to maintain my weight. Because of my activity level, I could eat almost anything without thinking of the effect my food intake could have on my future. Then, one season, I decided to stop eating junk and fast food altogether. I just stopped, cold turkey. Watching the movie Super Size Me definitely helped sway me in that direction. There was a palpable and amazing difference in the way I felt after a just a few weeks. Year by year, I continued to strip away “foods” that I felt were counterproductive to developing good nutritional habits.
My body continued to change, and I felt the positive effects of my efforts paying off. I had always been capable of running all game long, but now I could do it with even less effort. Our team had made arrangements for us to eat meals at the neighboring grade school cafeteria. When they first told me about it, I wasn’t particularly excited.
The faded canned vegetables, sloppy joes and green jello cafeteria fare I watched my friends eat back at Mayflower Elementary didn’t trigger nostalgic thoughts about grade school cafeteria food to me. It was Fabien who finally convinced me to at least give it a try one day. I was stunned by what I saw. This was actual food and had nothing in common with the trays full of slop that oozed down the sides of the trashcans at my school every day after lunch. Here in Geneva, there were chefs actually preparing and cooking locally grown food. It was amazing. Those school kids ate much better than most Americans of any age...

Lauding an AAU coach
From Coach Bob Walsh, comes a link about a well-respected AAU coach (there is a need to acknowledge that a lot of good work is put in by these coaches). An excerpt:
“Minus my parents I’d say coach Parker probably has been the most important,” said Knight. “Coach Parker really gave me a certain confidence about the game. When I started playing for him I was unsure as to what I wanted to do and I didn’t know how good I could be, but from Day 1 he told me I could be as good as I wanted to be, I just had to work for it.
“I’ve never wanted to work for a coach as much as I wanted to work for him.”

A slew of Ivan Rabb material
First, from Aran Smith/NBA Draft:
"...During Thursday’s first practice, the injured crew of Isaiah Briscoe (foot), Derryck Thornton (hand), Cheick Diallo (back) and Ivan Rabb (foot) sat in chairs on the sideline and were unable to play.
“It’s a big bummer, but at least I get to come out here and support my guys,” the 6-foot-10 Rabb out of Oakland (CA) Bishop O’Dowd told SNY.tv in this interview. “I have a lot of friends and people who are here...”
Then this from Zagoria:
"...Asked if any schools would definitely make the final list, he 6-foot-10 Oakland (CA) Bishop O’Dowd forward said, “I can say Cal and Kentucky will definitely be on that list.”
He told SNY.tv at the Peach Jam that he talks with Malik Newman and Diamond Stone about possibly all joining forces in college, and mentioned Kentucky and Kansas as two possible landing spots..."
Ivan Rabb and Henry Ellenson both appear to be overrated. On the current ESPN high school rankings in the senior class, these two rate 1st and 5th respectively, and granted both players had stellar summers on the AAU circuit, and were caught in a numbers game playing behind Giles and Stone. Rabb is coming off an ankle injury, but his tendency to not always go strong to the basket remains a real concern. He's got Bosh like tendencies, both the good and bad (soft)...Via Adam Zagoria regarding players in the upcoming (Saturday) Under Armour Elite 24:

Here's hoping this is the season that the 6-foot-6 forward garners much more playing time and blossoms. It has been a total of 981 minutes thus far as a Golden Eagle so it would be good to see him earn 25 minutes per game on the court.

The world of Curtis Malone
Pete Thamel goes long and very informative on Curtis Malone, the founder of the DC Assault program.
One captivating quote: "...he left friends, family and the basketball world to figure out whether he was an AAU coach moonlighting as a drug dealer or a drug dealer masquerading as an AAU coach..."
This piece is also spot-on with its depiction of the placement of prospects by a top club team and the hiring of some college assistant coaches.

Borzello talking with coaches on their behavior
Like this quote from a coach in Jeff Borzello's latest on coaching behavior:
"There is a huge difference in being a jackass and a father figure. You can't make a difference in someone's life if they don't respect you. You have to find the line and not cross it. It's tough. But you can't ever put hands on a kid or say certain things. You never could and you just shouldn't ever."
