Utah gets bopped by UCLA and then comes back to obliterate USC on Sunday. It was a quiet game for Delon Wright -- 11 points, five rebounds, three steals -- but his effort and that of his teammates was obviously more than enough. The score was 32-12 at halftime.

Cal 90, Washington 88

Up in Seattle on Sunday, Cal got by Washington 90-88 as Jabari Bird produced 12 points on 6-10 shooting. For UW, Darin Johnson scored eight points but shot 3-9 overall, 2-4 from long distance.

Simpson 85, Pacific Union 77

It was Simpson University 85-77 over Pacific Union on Saturday despite Jordan (Napa Valley College/Hogan High) Greenwell providing a 16 point/10 rebound double-double. He shot 6-10 overall, 2-2 from beyond the arc.

Cal Maritime 68, Menlo College 64

It was Cal Maritime by four, 68-64, over Menlo College on Saturday. For CM, Dominique (Manteca High) Barnes led with 17 points, Kameron (Porterville College) Hoyt was close behind with 16 and Zach Davis posted an 11 point, 11 rebound double-double.

For Menlo, Colin (Cañada College/Archbishop Mitty High) Wan led with both 10 points and four assists. Austen (Sacramento High) Brooks added 10 points plus four boards and Mikey (College Park High) Eggleton supplied nine points and three assists.

Williams hit the 20 point mark

Indian Hills College won again, this one against Marshalltown on Saturday by a score of 106-93. Gary Williams scored 21 points, including 7-8 from the foul line, to aid the cause.

"Corsairs roll to third straight win

Last time, two weeks ago at their place, the Feather River Golden Eagles hung 105 points on College of the Redwoods and handed the CR men’s basketball team its third consecutive Golden Valley Conference loss.
This time, not so much.

Redwoods held the Eagles to just 22 first-half points in Eureka on Saturday and picked up its third straight conference win, beating Feather River 67-51.
“It’s taken us a while, but we’re finally starting to gel as a team,” said CR head coach Justin Mora. “Our defensive intensity was off the charts. It was just real effort all the way around and a great team win.”

CR sophomore Johnny Shelton led all scorers with 20 points, while Melvin Washington picked 16 in his fourth straight start, including 13 in the first half.

“Melvin’s been playing real smart and aggressive and he’s really coming into his own,” Mora said. 

Redwoods led 31-22 at halftime, holding the Eagles to their lowest scoring half of the season. After losing their opening three conference games by 34, 40 and 23 points, respectively, the Corsairs have won their past three GVC games by 13, 21 and 16 points.

“We’re playing our best basketball at the right time,” Mora said. 

The Corsairs built a 15-point lead with just nine minutes remaining in the game, but the Eagles quickly cut it to an eight-point deficit by the five-minute mark.

Then, back-to-back buckets from Shelton, one after a steal, pushed the lead back up to 12 and sealed the victory.

“We had a couple periods where it got a little rocky,” Mora said. “But we did a really good job limiting our turnovers down the stretch and took good care of the ball.”

CR’s Bryce Rose also finished in double figures, scoring 13.

With the win, the Corsairs improve to 3-3 in the GVC (9-12 overall) and play next on Thursday at Siskiyous.

“We just want to keep it rolling,” Mora said. “When you have it going like this, we’d like to play again tomorrow if we could, but we’re just going to keep playing hard and try to keep this thing going.”

On Saturday night in the state capital, Sacramento State pulled one out in a true team effort to defeat Montana 70-69. Dylan Garrity's very late trey was the game-winner.

Mikh McKinney (plus six assists) and Cody Demps (plus five rebounds) each scored 18 points to lead the Hornets with teammate Eric Stuteville providing 13 points, five boards and two blocked shots.

For the Grizz, Mario Dunn enjoyed 14 points plus five assists.

UC Davis 81, Cal Poly 78

At home, UC Davis pulled it out 81-78 in an overtime matchup with Cal Poly last night. The Mustangs led 40-30 after the initial 20 minutes.

Aggie Josh Ritchart produced 24 points and seven boards. He shot 6-8 from beyond the arc.

Up Arcata way, Humboldt State sent San Francisco State home with an 86-71 loss on Saturday. In 23 minutes for the Lumberjacks, Tom (Diablo Valley College) Witzel supplied 15 points and five rebounds while Udun (Fresno City College) Osakue's 27 points, seven boards and four steals paced the Gators.

Chico State hosted Cal State Dominguez Hills and grabbed a 67-57 victory on Saturday. Robert (Granite Bay High) Duncan was the tip of the spear for the Wildcats with 23 points and also corralled six caroms.

Down south, Cal State San Bernardino pulled out a 78-77 victory over Sonoma State on Saturday. For SSU, James (Northern Colorado/Arroyo High) Davis exploded for 28 points with J.J. (Colorado State-Pueblo/Bradshaw Christian High) Mina tallying 19 points plus eight boards.
