An update from Keenan McMiller at Merritt College
* 6-foot-3 sophomore Saajid (Grant High) Polite is headed to Sacramento State to play for Coach Brian Katz
McMiller: "Saajid is on time to graduate [from Merritt] and he will redshirt his first year and begin playing in 2012-2013."
*6-foot-7 sophomore William Tolefree is headed to Texas A&M Prairie View
and
* 6-foot-7 sophomore Richard Walker is also headed to Texas A&M Prairie View
Tolefree and Walker prepped in the Atlanta area.
McMiller: "William will graduate this summer and Richard will graduate on time. A coaching friend of a friend came in and watched them a few times and then the head coach and assistant coach at Texas A & M Prairie View made a trip here."
TAMPV is led by Coach Byron Rimm II and is a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).
McMiller also will have 6-foot-3 sophomore Roman (Rodriguez High) Robinson and 6-foot-5 sophomore Joshua (Berkeley High) Hatcher moving on but their next residences are quite set as yet. We'll post that information as soon as it is settled.
He also has what looks like another impressive set of Bay Area newcomers heading to Merritt but that's for another article/another time.

i take issue with your comparison of DLS and Fresno State when you wrote-

having worked with Boyd Grant on a project about defense, I can tell you that a breakdown of old game tape from that era actually proved quite the opposite - Fresno State actually shot the ball faster than their opponents did on an average possession in the half court
FSU averaged a shot within 17 seconds per possession per game, whereas their opponents averaged a shot within 19 seconds per possession game-
this was due to FSU's defense approach which forced teams to burn clock in an effort to get something going on
it still frosts Boyd and Ron Adams to this day that people say they held the ball - they didn't- it was actually their opponents who burned more clock.

Here's an insightful story, fortunately not based in California, on what some people will do to survive/prosper/call it whatever you wish. The team that jogged onto a Fort Lauderdale basketball court for the regional quarterfinal playoff wearing baggy silver and blue jerseys sure didn't look like a high school squad. Their center was 6'8". Four of their guards were over 6'5". The squad had reserves coming off the bench that were 6'6" or 6'7".\Go here for the remainder.

A Kiwi and PeeWee update
Spoke with Marvin Lea, an assistant coach at Westwind Prep and a former star at Pepperdine, and he filled us in on a couple of Bay Area natives currently ballin' and studying in Phoenix.
Lea said that Kiwi Gardner has passed his SAT exam and that Providence remains very interested in him despite the recent change in coaches (from Keno Davis to Ed Cooley).
He also informed us that Kiwi has been chosen to participate in the National High School Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships to take place April 1 in Texas. The competition will air on Sunday, April 3 at 1:30 p.m. on CBS.

DLS falls to Mater Dei
It wasn't pretty but that doesn't matter. Mater Dei won the last two quarters, especially the fourth and beat De La Salle 41-36 tonight.
The Spartans led 9-7 at the end of one and 18-12 at the half. MD got close --- 28-27 -- at the end of three quarters and burst ahead with a 14-8 fourth quarter point differential.
In that final period, Mater Dei opened with a backdoor layup to take the lead at 29-28 but the Spartans countered with one of their own. MD then made it 31-30, 33-30 and then 35-30 before DLS managed to stem the run with a free throw at the 3:23 mark. After that, it was misses at the foul line that hampered the southlanders from extending the lead. With 24.2 seconds remaining, the Spartans scored on a layup to make it 39-36 but that was as close as DLS could make it.
DLS sophomore Elliott Pitts left the game in the first quarter with what was described as a fractured jaw.
Notes on the game:
