Clayton is playing his senior season at Elev8 Sports Academy in Orlando, Fla., but originally attended Castro Valley High School, where he averaged 17 points per game as a junior. He chose WKU over offers from San Francisco, San Jose State, UC-Davis and Utah State.
"Derrick is very versatile and can play (shooting guard) or (small forward),” [WKU Coach Ray] Harper said. “His upside is off the charts. He is a guy who has the chance to be special. Like most kids coming in as a freshman, we have to add some weight to him, but he's a guy who really knows how to score the basketball. He can get the ball to the basket, which is something we are desperately missing."
