HEADED TO THE GRAPE VINES:
CR’s Mitchell Hash commits to Sonoma State

College of the Redwoods sophomore Mitchell Hash will join teammate James Slade at Sonoma State University next fall, the 6-foot, 6-inch, 200-pound guard/forward hybrid out of Eureka announced Monday.

“I’m just super excited,” said Hash, who averaged 12 points and 4.6 rebounds per game his sophomore season. “First of all I just really liked the school in general, but I had a chance to play with the team and meet the coaches and I really liked everybody. There was a cool vibe and it’s going to be pretty sweet to have James down there also.”

The pair of former Corsairs already have an apartment lined up they’ll be sharing when they report to practice in late August. “They’re close friends and that familiarity should help them make an easy transition,” said CR head coach Justin Mora. “I couldn’t be happier for both of them.”

Redwoods had its best season of the coach Mora era in 2013-14, finishing the year 16-10 overall and in a three-way tie for second place in the Golden Valley Conference (6-4).

Hash and Slade were a big reason why as the duo consistently filled up the stat sheets with their unselfish play.

“I think Mitchell’s length will be a huge asset for Sonoma,” Mora said. “He’ll have to shoot it a little better, but I think he’s strong enough to be very successful. He has a ton of potential.” According to Hash, although he weighed the option of trying to walk-on at Humboldt State, the decision to play at Sonoma was an easy one.

“It pretty much just came down to the fact I wanted to get out of town and start something new,” Hash said. “But it’s definitely going to be fun playing at home.”

The CR men’s basketball program has now had four of its players go on to four-year universities in the past two seasons, including Shaquille Jones (Simpson), Dylan Ingersoll (Humboldt), Slade and now Hash.

“It’s a step in the right direction for the program,” Mora said. “The goal is to help these guys move on to the next level and it’s really gratifying as a coach to see the players you’ve worked with move on.”
