Former Cal Poly and Salesian High point Markel Leonard has made his choice and his sophomore year will take place at Santa Rosa Junior College.
So why Coach Craig McMillan and the defending state champion Bear Cubs for the 6-foot-0 point?
"Because one of my dreams is playing DI basketball and Coach McMillan is a great coach with a great resume. He was a dynamic guard, the starting point at Arizona, playing with Sean Elliott and Steve Kerr. Our personalities match because we're both quiet competitors, silent assassins."
McMillan also has a burgeoning track record of getting his backcourters to the DI level, what with Sama Taku, Kevin Aronis, Bobby Sharp, Matt Hayes and Alec Kobre of late.
What Bear Cub fans can expect from their new guard is "speed, quickness, shooting ability, a guard who can defend and comes with a winning attitude and tradition."
Leonard suffered a foot injury early on as a Cal Poly freshman and that set back his adjustment to college ball. However, the good part was the Mustangs winning the Big West Conference tournament championship and then beating Texas Southern as part of the NCAA Big Dance.
Having been part of a Salesian High state championship team, then on a college squad taking the conference crown, what comes next for Leonard in 2014-15?
