"For most of LPAC’s history, winning was the team’s overriding philosophy. After losing in the 2013 championship game of the U19 Police Athletic League, the Knights refused to accept their second-place trophies. After their defeat, the team’s head coach, Danny Mena, called Crespo while getting into a cab to head home. Upon hearing the team had walked out, Crespo told Mena to stop the cab, demanding the coach and players walk back into the gym and apologize for their behavior, to face their defeat with grace.
“They took their second-place trophies, their picture, and walked out,” Crespo recalled. “Then I had to [realize] that this was my fault. I created this...”
