Jerry Mullen has been hosting national junior college basketball events for what seems like forever and he also operates a well-respected scouting service. His latest -- Mullen’s JC Showcase featuring 160 players from across the nation and Mullen’s JC Top 100 Camp -- took place last weekend in Overland Park, Kansas.
"There's no experience like it," explained Merritt College Coach Keenan McMiller, who was in attendance. "It's a high major event based on height and athleticism alone. There were about 25 guys from 6-foot-8 to 7-0 feet and another 30 ranging from 6-foot-4 to 6-foot-7. It's like going to one of the Adidas Gauntlet or Nike EYBL events with about 300 college coaches in attendance." Staff from USC, California, UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine, UC Davis, Pacific, Cal State Fullerton were on hand as well as reps from other Golden State-based basketball programs.
Two sophomore talents out of northern California stood out: 6-foot-2 Tyrell (El Cerrito High) Alcorn plus 6-foot-2 Zach (Berkeley High) Copeland out of City College of San Francisco.
In the 2015-16 season, Alcorn averaged 14.6 points, 3.5 boards and 2.2 assists while shooting 55%, 48% and 77% for the Thunderbirds. Copeland averaged 11.7 points plus 3.3 rebounds on the state championship team, shooting 46%, 42% and 80%.
"Tyrell took over as a point," McMiller said. "He shot pretty well and took 10 charges." While there, Alcorn also received a scholarship offer from New Orleans, a member of the Southland Conference, with other suitors in the pipeline.
As for Copeland, McMiller called him "the best player in the event." Look for his recruiting to get fast and furious soon.
