Appeal-Democrat: "Armed with a 10-point lead with 30 seconds left, the Yuba College men's basketball team looked to cruise to another Bay Valley Conference win on the road against College of Marin in Kentfield.
The Mariners gave quite the scare over the final moments, cutting the deficit to single digits before the 49ers hit key free throws down the stretch to come away with an 85-79 win.
The 49ers overcame a first half that saw them miss several shots and layups in the paint to take a double-digit advantage throughout the second half. However, it was the free throws that helped carry the team to another key road victory.
"We nailed our free throws in those final moments, and if we didn't do that, I'm certain we would have lost," said Yuba coach Doug Cornelius, who credited the defensive switch from a man-to-man to zone defense that helped play a role in a second-half turnaround for the 49ers.
Battling through the flu, Jourdan Johnson scored 12 of his team-high 19 points in the first half to lead the 49ers. Jihad Woods had 19 points, including 15 in the second half, and the trio of Thomas Austefjord, Xavier Francois and Erik Scheive all finished with 10 points."
