There is a new travel team -- the Tyler Johnson Elite (TJE) -- ready to make its formal appearance in northern California, southern California, Las Vegas as well as other prominent AAU hoops locations.
Sponsored by Miami Heat guard Tyler Johnson who played at St. Francis High and then Fresno State, the TJE is going to be a hands-on approach. "I liked what they are doing and wanted the opportunity to share my experience," Johnson explained. "Getting to work with the kids and going to tournaments, participating the team-bonding are part of what I want to do. I also want to help with player development in the summer."
He added, "Jamon (Osby, the Tyler Johnson Elite head coach) will continue to do his thing and I'll be helping out the coaches and passing on things I've learned, things I've picked up. We want the kids to have the best opportunity to be successful and help them take their game to another level."
"Tyler trusts the organization, coaching staff, and most importantly the players to be willing to attach his name/brand and time to this team, which means a lot," Osby said. "It isn’t like Tyler is coming around the team for the first time -- he has been a part of this process for the past three years."
Osby continued, "When building this team, it was important for me that each player truly loved the game and was “all-in” to the process of doing whatever it takes to make it. I am happy that with Tyler’s help, we are able to provide these kids with a better opportunity to be seen and hopefully earn a college scholarship."
Downplaying what he has created in an area tagged as an arid location for AAU basketball talent, Osby offered, "We've been lucky with the talent but the most important reason is how hard these kids work on getting better. All the credit goes to the players.”
Another aspect where Johnson will be providing insight is "getting it right mentally. There can be a lot of pressure in AAU, from parents and with coaches in the stands. I just enjoyed playing the game and want to make sure the kids do that."
