Thuesday: St. Mary's 85, VCU 77

In Salt Lake City on Thursday, St. Mary's used 56% overall shooting as well as 29-39 accuracy at the foul line to defeat Virginia Commonwealth 85-77 and move on in the Big Dance.

Also of northern California interest is what Jordan Ford chooses to do after the season. This is not based on any rumor, let alone "alternative facts" -- it's numbers generated. Simply put: will Ford get on the court more and therefore play a larger role as a sophomore? If that appears unlikely, will he remain in Moraga?

Overall, Ford played in 28 games for the Gaels and averaged 5.8 minutes an outing but that number shrunk to just 4.1 minutes in West Coast Conference play. He shot very well -- 45%, 50%, 80% -- for his limited conference participation.

One key: guard Joe Rahon, owner of a 100/26 assist-to-turnover ratio, is graduating and thus leaving 40 minutes available.

6-foot-1 Emmett Naar returns for his senior season and he has a starting spot locked down. His shooting accuracy across the spectrum was better than that of Rahon and he posted a bit lesser 92/47 assist-to-turnover ratio.

6-foot-6 junior-to-be Tanner Krebs is a shooting guard who played 14.1 minutes a contest in conference but didn't shoot particularly well this season.

6-foot-2 junior-to-be Stefan Gonzalez averaged 6.2 minutes and then 4.4 in the WCC. He looks to be more of a shooter than point.

6-foot-2 Tommy Kulse redshirted as a freshman and appears to be more of a shooting guard than quarterback.

6-foot-4 Angus Glover, yet another Aussie, is coming in as a freshman and listed as a shooting guard.

Out of Latvia and New Hampton School (in New Hampshire), 6-foot-3 Kristers Zoriks is also coming in as a freshman and designated as a point.

So Ford's competition at the point is Zoriks. At shooting guard, it's multiple.

Another factor in the equation: how does Coach Randy Bennett want to use Naar?
