Brian Barbour, prep basketball teammate of Stanford All-America tight end Zach Ertz at Monte Vista-Danville, has become the 25th player in Columbia University history to score 1,000 career points.


The senior guard topped the 1,000-point mark with a 19-point performance in the Lions' win over American on Sunday. A first-team All-Ivy League selection a year ago, Barbour is averaging 14.1 points.

Yes, it would be over the top to call Columbia anti-American but the Lions did down the Eagles 54-42 yesterday. Senior backcourter Brian Barbour totaled 19 points plus four assists. Stephen Lumpkins posted an 18/12 double-double for American.

Senior Brian Barbour was selected as one of 30 NCAA men's basketball student-athletes as candidates for the 2012-13 Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition. 

Barbour is a 2011-12 First Team All-Ivy Leaguer, who averaged 15.5 points and 4.4 assists in 30 games last season. In addition to his stellar play on the court, the Alamo, Calif. product is involved with Alex's Lemonade Stand - an organization that supports Pediatric Cancer research - and also volunteers at the soup kitchen at St. John the Divine and multiple basketball clinics in the area.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. 

The candidate classes will be narrowed to 10 men's and 10 women's finalists midway through the regular season, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one men's finalist and one women's finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. 


The men's Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2013 NCAA Final Four in Atlanta April 6 and 8.

2. Brian Barbour, Columbia - I almost went with being the devil's advocate on this pick. Barbour's numbers and performance almost convinced me to put him at the top of the rankings. That would have meant going against almost every pundit out there. It would have meant bucking the trend. It was just that numbers for Hummer were so much stronger. That isn't to take away from Barbour and what it means for him to be the No. 2 player here. His 5.3 HW30 is the second best returning mark in the conference, and was the fifth best in the league all of last season, putting him just about on par with Zack Rosen in terms of value. Rosen walked away with the player of the year award with that value, meaning that Barbour could do the same if he turns in a similar year. I could see Barbour improving enough on the defensive side to push him into the top position by the end of the year. His offense is already top notch, especially with his move to point guard, which could have been a struggle. The race between him and Hummer to become the conference stud should come to a head in February when the two teams play their two games in the round robin.

Ten Winter Student-Athletes Gain Academic All-Ivy League Honors

The Ivy League released its list of student-athletes selected for 2011-12 Academic All-Ivy League honors for the winter season and 10 Columbia students were recognized for their achievements. In order to be eligible for the Academic All-Ivy League squad, a student-athlete must have been a starter or key reserve on his or her team.

Another honor for Columbia's Brian Barbour

Columbia junior guard Brian Barbour was named to the Division I all-district second team, as chosen by members of the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

Barbour is one of six Ivy League players selected to the first or second team in District 13, which was comprised of players from the Ivy League and the Patriot League. It is the third straight year that a Columbia player has earned all-district honors. Noruwa Agho was a second team all-district honoree in 2010 and 2011.

Barbour led the Ivy League in assists (5.6 assists per game) and was second in scoring (16.9 points per game) during league games. For the season, Barbour averaged 15.5 points and 4.3 assists in 30 games this season.

Barbour scored in double figures 24 times this season, topped 20 points 10 different times and established new career highs in points and assists in a game. A tremendous floor general, Barbour's assist to turnover ratio was 1.9 to 1. He also made 90.1 percent of his free throws, which led the Ivy League and currently ranks third in the nation.

Not only was Barbour one of the league's most efficient offensive players, he was an effective defender, often called upon to limit taller guards. Barbour finished second on the team in steals and even grabbed 2.8 rebounds per game in average of 35.6 minutes per game.

Barbour receives All-Ivy nod

Columbia's Brian Barbour, finishing first in assists and second in scoring, has landed a spot on the All-Ivy League First team and rightly so for the junior.

Harvard 77, Columbia 70

It went into overtime before Harvard garnered a 77-70 win over Columbia as two Bay Area talents looked good. The Crimson's Oliver McNally concluded with 12 points plus four assists while Brian Barbour of the Lions totaled 23 points, five assists and two steals.

* Has scored in double figures in 13 of the last 14 games
* Scored 20+ points nine times this season
* Dished out a career-high 10 assists in Columbia’s last game vs. Brown.

Against Brown, it was Barbour’s first career double-double (18 points) and the highest assist total for a Columbia player in eight years.
