CCSF over Cabrillo

Caught the Cabrillo College - City College of San Francisco matchup last night -- it turned out to be an 82-51 victory for the visiting Rams.

CCSF led 44-26 at the half but the Seahawks held an 11-8 early lead before all went the way of Coach Justin Lebagh's group as Cabrillo got "Dulani-ed" or "Robinson-ed" -- take your pick.

The undefeated Rams (15-0) are likely to remain so for the season (just what Coach Labagh wants to read) and here's the rationale for such a prediction:

* Athleticism - nobody else has the same bevy of athletes as those residing on the Ram roster

* Defense - comes first like it's in the DNA of the CCSF players as they pressure one-on-one on the outside like madmen and overplay/ballhawk on even basic passes

* Unselfishness - if 'D' is first, next to it is unselfishness as on one play in the first half there were four passes all in the paint from different Ram players as each could have gone up but sacrificed that for an even better look for a teammate

CCSF is not necessarily a great shooting team but athleticism, defense and unselfishness don't take nights off like a shooting touch can do.

For Cabrillo, Northern Arizona bounceback Colin Gruber totaled a very well-earned 16 points.

In three out of the four recent games for Cabrillo College, Northern Arizona bounceback Colin Gruber has surpassed the 30-point mark --  32 against Butte, 31 versus College of Marin and 32 points going up against Las Positas.

In the opening round of the Shasta College tournament, Cabriilo College topped Merritt College 64-58. Colin (Aptos High) Gruber paced the Seahawks with 28 points.

Soph Colin Gruber paced the Seahawks with 30 points in a 65-62 loss to Sacramento State in a tournament sponsored this past weekend by Ohlone College.

That was followed by a 57-50 victory over San Joaquin Delta in the same tourney. The 6-foot-5 Gruber again led with 14 points.

Colin Gruber earns Male Athlete of the year

The Santa Cruz Sentinel has named harbor High's Colin Gruber its Male Athlete of the Year:

Gruber, a 6-foot-3, 173-pound senior, excelled at two sports.

A point guard for the Pirates' basketball team, Gruber led the county in scoring, averaging 26.6 points per game. He was named Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League MVP by league coaches and the Sentinel's basketball player of the year.

He recorded 317 rebounds, 102 blocks and 80 steals for the Pirates [20-8], who finished tied for second with Aptos in the SCCAL behind champion Santa Cruz. The Pirates advanced to the Central Coast Section Division IV quarterfinals, where they suffered a 53-52 season-ending loss to Carmel at Menlo School.

Gruber, who will play next season for NCAA Division I Northern Arizona, produced a double-double in 25 of 28 games.

He scored 30 or more points in eight games, including a pair or 42-point efforts against Aptos on Jan. 21 and St. Francis Feb. 8.

On the baseball field --" he last played three years ago as a freshman --" Gruber earned first-team all-SCCAL honors and was named to the Sentinel's All-County team as a outfielder.

He batted .364 [24-for-66] with four doubles and a home run. He had 17 RBIs and 17 runs scored. He also pitched and didn't allow a run in six appearances. He struck out 10 batters and walked six in 8 1/3 innings, allowing just three hits.
