Jeremy Russotti reports: "Josh Akognon heading to the Spurs next week. Josh has been working on his defense and leg strength HARD lately"
That seems like a great pairing, going to a mature squad and one with a coach (Gregg Popovich) who really gets how to maximize the strengths of his individual players.

Tyler Gaffaney is ready to rip
There are early bloomers,
right-as-expected-timers, late flourishers and non-starters in all
manner of athletics and former Branson High
basketball player Tyler Gaffaney has broken down door #3 and is now
ready to make his mark.
Gaffaney was a solid player during his time at Branson, strong on
fundamentals but not necessarily seen as on a breakthrough trajectory.
He signed with Coach Ken Scalmanini and the Claremont - Mudd - Scripps
program.
Coming from a very successful prep program, he landed with another as the
Stags have earned league championships in six of the past 10 seasons, including both seasons Gaffaney has been on the roster..
After playing as a freshman, the
6-foot-3 Gaffaney and his teammates repeated this past season with him
performing as a full-time starter averaging 10.4 points and 4.3 rebounds a game, on
52%, 44% and 75% shooting while playing point and shooting guard.
Claremont - Mudd - Scripps lost 76-74 in overtime to then defending
national champion St. Thomas in the first round of the D-III national
playoffs.
Regarding the difference in his game between now and high school,
Gaffaney said, "I was more a slasher in high school and now I'm a lot stronger and a better three-point and pullup
shooter."
He added, "I've continued to work hard. I've always had a feel for the
game and I'm able to absorb information quickly and that has helped.
It's been a fun ride and it's coming together now.".
Alongside his effort, what also facilitated his development was Gaffaney
was connecting with Santa Rosa area skills trainer Jeremy Russotti. "I
did his camps earlier but started working out individually with him
after high school and that has made all the difference."
Russotti was effusive about his protege.
"Tyler
epitomizes the type of player we like to train in our GRT program. He
has worked side-by-side with Josh Akognon for the past two and a half
years. He started as a sparring type player and now he is one of our top
guys. His footwork is absolutely perfect and he does exactly what you
teach. It is rare to have a client who trusts everything you say and
implements your teachings immediately.
I applaud him for staying with the school he loves but I do
not see him as a D-III player. He could play for most D-I programs right
now and fit in. He is far more skilled and a better player than most
D-I guys who come train with us. When pro guys or college guys come in
to workout, the first thing we do is match them up against Tyler. 10 out
of 10 times, Tyler will beat them one-on-one. Afterwards, most of these
guys ask him which pro team he plays for. It's comical.
But Tyler is not only a great player -- he is a model
student, hard worker, and displays a great attitude at anything he does.
He recently started to work for us since he is such a great teacher and
really understands skill mastery and development and how to relate to
people.
I always love to hear when Josh tells me that Tyler is
probably the best defender he has ever gone against. Josh also believes
that Tyler has a professional career ahead of him and has the game to
show.
The next evolution for Tyler is to believe he is the toughest guy to guard on the court and that he is the man! He has been a role guy since his days at Branson and always fit that perfectly. Now he needs to take what he learned and become the go-to-guy on the offensive end. Once he realizes he is the best player on the floor, he will become an All-American."
As Russotti mentioned above, one of Gaffaney's early strengths is a facet often given the short shrift on the court.

As Russotti mentioned above, one of Gaffaney's early strengths is a facet often given the short shrift on the court.
"I
grew up focusing more on defense rather than offense, and my offense
was secondary earlier in my career" Gaffaney explained. "So i've always
made sure to work hard and improve on the defensive end of the floor as
well as the offensive end because I've always believed defense to be
very important."
Akognon offers an amen here: "Tyler is the best defender I have ever
played against, including NBA guys I have gone against."
Now the burgeoning upperclassman is ready for a breakout season.
Let's have Akognon elucidate: "Tyler is going to explode this next year and he has the potential to play somewhere at the next level. He is the hardest working guy I know outside of my friends who are professionals. Tyler should be at a D-1 school hands down."
Gaffaney returned the kudos.
"Taking on Josh, he's one of those guys you can't really stop. I try to stay close because of his jumper but I also need to stay strong when he goes to the hoop."
Gaffaney wasn't recruited by D-1 schools as a prep senior and his
decision to go with Claremont - Mudd - Scripps was instigated by both
the high level of academics and because Bob Donlan, his former Branson
coach, played there.
So are there moments where he ponders the possibility of changing and challenging talent at higher levels?
"No, I love my school, my coach and my friends there."
But whatever the level of competition, such isn't keeping him from wanting to remain connected to hoops.
The psychology and economics dual major said, "I would love to keep
playing basketball and do it for a living. When Father Time taps me on
the shoulder and says it's time to end, then coaching is something I'll
look at."
But first comes two more seasons collegiately
Plus of course, more work dedicated to improvement.

GET OUT OF MY GYM
Getting a kick out of Jeremy Russotti's GET OUT OF MY GYM TWEETS -- here's a sample:
* If you say in my workouts, "why are we working on Defense"? GET OUT OF MY GYM. Defense is 50% of the game! It has to be trained as well
* If you are not willing to take a charge for your teammates and always wimp out - GET OUT OF MY GYM. Be tough for your teammates
* If your goal in life is to be on as many mix tape highlights as you can, then make a signal to the camera after - "GET OUT OF MY GYM"

Jeremy Russotti will be the the 2012 Skills Director and Phil Doherty the Skills Co-Director at the upcoming Pangos All-American Event in Los Angeles.
"I am very excited to be chosen to take part in an event for the Top 100 players in the country," Russotti said. "I am going to try put as much of my blue print of functional training as I can in the two days I have on the floor."

Big time happenings in Santa Rosa
There is no off-season in any sport, especially basketball. That is, if you want to get better and not get left behind. Come this weekend, a prime yet remarkable example of just this will take place.
On Saturday, a prominent Sports Illustrated senior writer is going to descend on Santa Rosa, specifically Jeremy Russotti's training venue where the latter will be working out Shabazz Muhammad, the top prospect in the country and former Casa Grande High star now international baller Josh Akognon.
That pairing in itself speak volumes but it's what attracted the attention of this country's top sports magazine.
Muhammad is headed to UCLA in September. Life is set for him. A year, maybe two with the Bruins and then it's off to fame and fortune in the NBA. But the young man and his father know -- that being the key that sets them apart from so many others -- that a transformation of his game is necessary in order to secure that bright future. The physical abilities, edgy toughness and maximum effort are already present. But just as important is that the hunger to get better, the willingness to learn and the desire to be challenged and not protected are also the keys to Muhammad's future success.
As Russotti put it, "People may think I am crazy to say this, but Shabazz is far from a finished product and has very little offensive technique to start with." He continued, "But playing hard and training hard, you cannot force that. And Shabazz has that once in a lifetime innate drive to be the best."
For Akognon, he's enjoyed well-paying stints in China, averaging 29 points per game and 27 points per game in the last two seasons overseas. He's doing well financially and understands that there are many ways to the NBA. Nobody outworks him and it's been that way for years under Russotti's tutelage. Says Russotti, "Akognon is a rare player that has trained at the highest level for like eight years straight and has never thought twice about deviating away from his goals. He doesn't talk, he's very humble, and has a workman approach to his craft. It is almost deja vu training both Shabazz and Josh together. It's scary how similar these guys are in personality and intrinsic motivation."
Simply put, Akognon and Muhammad are basketball kin, joined at the heart and head in terms of doing what is necessary to keep advancing.
How this all began is Russotti received an invite to work out Muhammad's Bishop Gorman High team -- that's where the paths of Russotti and Muhammad initially crossed. Then it was Russotti doing the same with Dream Vision, Muhammad's spring and summer club basketball squad.
The elder Muhammad eventually said to Russotti, "I don't know what you're doing with my son but in just a few weekends he looks like a two-guard."
Russotti was impressed by what he saw: "Shabazz doesn't talk, he trains, he works, he wants results. If you have seen him play, Shabazz usually gets what he goes after."
Eventually, it became four weekends of workouts with Shabazz, so far.
At some point, Muhammad saw footage of Akognon's play and was intrigued by how a 6-foot guard was so effective.
Simply put, Russotti acknowledged, "nobody beats Josh one-on-one consistently, nobody. Josh can make the best players humble really quickly when mano a mano."
Now the pair are training together and, prompted by Jeremy Lin's uber emergence this season, SI wants to do a feature on how a star talent is making his way to The Big Show plus how a lesser recognized talent is carving out his own path to donning an NBA uniform.
As Russotti describes it, "Josh's story is very Disney-like, and Shabazz is the vehicle that is allowing people to see how phenomenal this journey has been for all of us."

Jeremy Russotti upping Shabazz Muhammad's game
Phil Barber caught the action -- Jeremy Russotti working out UCLA signee Shabazz Muhammad up in Sonoma County this past weekend.
Some wise words from the article, which demonstrates why talent seek out Russotti:
Some wise words from the article, which demonstrates why talent seek out Russotti:
“We’re not worried about his shooting right now,” Russotti said. “He has everything he needs to be a shooter. It all comes down to making him the hardest guy to guard. What we want to do is take his strengths — his conditioning, his intensity, his desire — and make him just a menace on the court, guys chasing him around like a Ray Allen or a Rip Hamilton. Because he never stops.”

A Josh Akognon update
Always love the notes from Jeremy Russotti because I will learn something, one of my life's continuous goals. Josh Akognon has re-routed himself and as Jeremy put it: "Josh had a game last night. He scored 23 points in one quarter alone. Ended up with 33 points."

Jeremy Russotti and Shabazz Muhammad
Longtime basketball trainer extraordinaire Jeremy Russotti has been busy of late (as always) but dropped us a line with the latest happenings up in Windsor.
Josh Akognon is home from China. He averaged 28 points per game and once again was in the top five in scoring. He has multiple offers to go to top professional leagues for the play-offs, but has an offer that is supposed to go through any day to join the Los Angeles Lakers D-League team (Defenders). Hopefully, Josh will have some great games, and with a break here and there, be the next Jeremy Lin story...haha (our note: man, wouldn't that be something, another Bay Area prodigy).
(Jeremy (l) with Shabazz and a third person)
This weekend Shabazz Muhammad (Naismith Award winner and #1 player in the country) will heading to Windsor, to stay with me for the weekend......and of course to train with Josh and others. I then turn around the following weekend and head to Las Vegas to spend the weekend with him in Vegas for training. Then the last weekend in March, I will be working him out in Los Angeles, as I am also training the Dream Vision staff and players during their tryouts for the weekend.
I am also probably heading to the McDonalds All-American Game with Shabazz and his family since we are crash cramming right now to get him ready to be at the top of his game in front of the entire basketball world for that game (our note: think about it, one of 'our' guys training the top prep basketball player in the country)

Jeremy Russotti putting Windsor on the map
The premise is that you have to be big city -- LA, NY and the like -- in order to make a name for yourself.
Well, Jeremy Russotti is dispelling that myth big time (no pun intended).
Here's the latest from the Windsor, CA-based basketball skills trainer:
Well, Jeremy Russotti is dispelling that myth big time (no pun intended).
Here's the latest from the Windsor, CA-based basketball skills trainer:
"... a few weeks back I was selected as a headline speaker at the top basketball coaches conference in the U.S. It is called the Iowa Coaches Association and is run by Team USA Basketball National Development Coach Don Showalter. It was awesome since I was a speaker in the main gym, just before Boston Celtics Assistant coach Kevin Eastman and Oklahoma woman coach Sherri Coale.
It was an amazing experience and a huge honor to speak in front of 1,000 coaches in Iowa. It was great to hear the feedback I was getting after from the coaches and the directors.
My clinic was filmed by Championship Productions and will become a video in a few months. I am also in talks about joining Championship Productions for speaking on the NIKE tour this late spring.
My speaking engagement was on how to incorporate functional skill development training into your practices or off-season plans. Coach Showalter offered, "Jeremy Russotti is one of the best basketball development people in the business today. His innovative approach to player development will help players reach their full potential. His workouts are outstanding for any age of player."
I have also been contacted to be a headline speaker at the Texas State Coaches Association in May and I'm in talks with a few others for 2012."

Participant report from the North Bay's Finest October 15 event
2011 North Bay’s Finest Event
Outstanding Performance Report
Outstanding Performance Report
October 15, 2011
Raemond Hubbard, Sr., Fairfield High
Rae displayed impressive “pure” point guard skills. He pushed the ball quick in transition and distributed the ball to scorers in scoring positions. He knocked down a couple of uncontested threes and showed the ability to finish at the rim amongst bigger, faster, stronger players. His efforts on the defensive end to contain ballhandlers were equally impressive as his offensive contributions.
Travis Selle, Sr., Armijo High
Travis was unstoppable at times. He hit several open threes, scored mid-range pull-ups and repeatedly finished at the rim with contact both in transition and off post catches. He competed at both ends of the court and was very active on the glass.
Gabe Bealer, Jr., Antelope High
Gabe has an all-around offensive arsenal. He shoots competently from behind the arc, finishes acrobatically around the rim and showed the ability to make mid-range jumpers. Gabe is electric in transition, can impact the defensive end with his length and ability to guard multiple positions and is relentless on the glass.
Kellen Hill, Sr., Rodriguez High
Kellen was amazing in several different spurts. He shot the ball very well from behind the arc and displayed an ability to get a shot from anywhere on the floor. He made a couple of plays using the ball screen and was able to get into the teeth of defense to create shots for himself.
Lucas Vojak, So., Nevada Union High
Lucas is going to develop into a big-time player. He is a long, fundamentally sound big who can finish around the rim with either hand. He displayed the ability to get up and down the court during game competition and the potential to improve his skill set during the advancing skill training segment of the event.
Jordon Collier, So., Vanden High
Jordon is active in all phases of the game. He makes an impact of the defensive end with his length and athleticism and puts points on the board by running in transition and hitting the offensive glass. Beyond that, he showed the ability to handle in the half court and to create shots for himself.
Jacob Aruta, Fr., St. Marys High
Jacob displayed tons of promise in game competition. He showed an ability to get any shot he wanted for himself (at the rim or on the perimeter) and an ability to break down defenders to get his teammates shots as well.
Corey Doran, Sr., Fairfield High
Corey was productive around the rim off the dribble, out of the post and on the glass. More impressive, however, was the ability he showed handling the ball, both in transition and in the half court, to attack for himself and for his teammates. Corey was active defensively and controlled most of the defensive rebounds for his team.
Tajai Johnson, Sr., Vallejo High
Tajai put on a show with several aggressive rim attacks. He is a pure scorer who can get to the rim, knock down a step-back three or pull-up off the dribble. His unselfish nature and his ability to breakdown defenders for his teammates make him special.
Benjamin Jazuk, Sr., Benicia High
Ben put his versatility on display, scoring around the rim and from behind the 3-point line. Ben is very patient in the post and has a variety of moves to keep his defender off-balance. He shoots the ball well and moves very fluid for a player his size.
Isaiah Johnson, Fr., Freedom
Isaiah is another young player with tons of talent. He appeared solid in all aspects of his offensive game. He is a strong athlete with a scorer’s mentality. Isaiah was great in transition and continually found a way to get to the rim in the half court.
Aaron Cameron, Jr., Sacramento High
Although quiet in his production, Aaron displayed a polished skill set. He is deliberate and smooth in attack mode and very good in mid-range situations. Aaron is a great ball defender whose combination of speed and strength will bother most of the guards he competes against.
Parker Farris, Jr., McKinleyville High
Parker was very impressive in game action. He’s a big kid with great court vision and an ability to handle. He shot the ball with efficiency; hitting jumpers off the bounce and stroking three pointers off the catch.
Jalen Dupree, Sr., Fairfield High
Jalen is an impact player on the defensive end. He bullies handlers and dictates the pace of the game. He is electric in transition offense, gets to the rim in the half court and showed a knack for being in the right spots at the right times.
Colin Slater (Slam Magazine’s top 13-year-old in the USA)
Colin definitely did not disappoint. After a long drive from Fresno, Colin started competition impressing observers with his abilities to see the court and distribute. He showed complete control of the game and was not at all bothered by playing with older players. As he loosened up, his speed and skill began to show why he deserves that #1 ranking. Even though he is from out of the area, Colin trains with Jeremy Russotti and should be a nationally-ranked player in the coming years.

Jeremy Russotti featured in RISE
NorCal's Jeremy Russotti is the subject of a feature in the newest edition of Hoop Culture Magazine:
Please tell us how you made a global business from the game of basketball?
Just ask Jeremy Russotti as he began to chuckle when asked that question.
“I look back at this journey I started nine years ago and laugh at where it is today. I could have never imagined the game of basketball could have impacted my life so deeply.”
1% CLUB Basketball Services was officially founded in 2003 by Russotti. However, it was a few years previous when the club really began to evolve to where it is today. At that time, Jeremy was the head coach at Casa Grande High in Petaluma, CA.
Within his team, he developed a close bond to two of his players Angelo Tsagarakis (Oregon State) and Josh Akognon (Washington State).
Because of their endless hours of training and cocky belief that only a small minute population trained at their level they jokingly labeled themselves with the 1% CLUB moniker. Says Jeremy Russotti, “we were all very confident at that time and developed a brotherhood. Both kids became California State Players of the year and we believed that if we all stuck together, we could do anything we wanted in basketball”. Even though coach Russotti knew the direction both kids were taking in their journey as student athletes, his path at this point was open-ended.
After Josh Akognon graduated from high school, Jeremy retired from coaching and started to train players throughout northern California. “I started to realize that maybe I had a gift to train others and what we were doing really could impact other players from other regions”.
Within 2 short years, Jeremy formed “The Finest” Instructional Showcase Events, for guys like Josh who were never recruited heavily and used skill training to drive his way into college.
By using the story of Josh Akognon to drive his event curriculum, Jeremy built the events up to 6, expanding to Northern and Southern California, as well as to Alaska.
During this time, Coach Russotti began working on a shooting prototype that would help in an area of shooting that really nobody else was focusing on at the time Open Hand Follow through. The J-Glove was born and instantly became viral with the basketball bloggers and online stores.
“It also didn’t hurt that a few of the guys I trained led the NCAA in 3-Pointers made in 2008, and 3-Point % in 2009”.
Currently, the J-Glove is one of the highest selling basketball products online and used by multiple NBA, WNBA, and NCAA top teams.
From the success of the J-Glove and his widely viewed youtube videos, Jeremy was contacted by Alan Stein (Nike Official Body Conditioning Trainer) in 2010. “Alan gave me a call to tell me to keep working hard and he liked my training style. He also mentioned he would love to work parts of my company. I was able to scrapbook 9 years of hard work and put it to an archived DVDs that I can show my grandkids.
It is also special since guys like Josh and Angelo can be seen as high school players, and then through a latter DVD as a professional. And to top it off, I even have my two young children working out in them as well. Priceless!!”
Once Josh and Angelo became professional basketball players, Jeremy was still a part of their careers. Since it wasn’t broken, he decided to start Green Room Training or basketball training for the elite college or professional athlete.
Currently, it is an all-inclusive program that includes 4-star housing, chefs, massage therapists, body conditioning, skill training, cardiovascular analysis, nutrition, etc. Says Jeremy, “In my company, this is playtime for me. It is not work to train professional athletes, but rather rewarding to know that you can help this player make hundreds of thousands or potentially millions or more dollars in the future.”
Jeremy has visions of Green Room Training be the top training spots in the next three years for some of the top players in the world.
Furthermore, Jeremy has taken his business model to the next level and started to franchise his innovative training curriculum. Currently 1% CLUB Basketball K-12th Grade Training is in eight Cities in California and Oregon, and expanding to another 10 cities in the USA and globally within the next year.
Jeremy has found a way to certify his trainers, develop a progressive marketing plan that allows him to spread his training worldwide. Says Jeremy, “I am having an absolute blast traveling to other cities and states and implementing my training curriculum and ideas. We have reached thousands of kids already in the first 12 weeks of its existence. It is a lot of work, but it is well worth it and were really improving the quality of training in the areas we are touching down at.”
What is in the future for 1% CLUB Basketball. “Well we have a new product coming out for all sports called V-Bands that I am really excited about. Also developing three other products for Golf and Baseball. We also have a verbal to have two major NBA spokespersons for our products and potentially a deal with the NBA that will bring our products to TV. We are also working in multiple iphone and Blackberry applications for our products and services, in order to stay cutting edge with technology.”
Jeremy Russotti sounds like a man on a mission who is really trying to put his stamp on the game of basketball in many ways.
Says Jeremy, “I absolutely love what I am doing. I do not feel I am working at all. I don’t think I am a business savvy type person, but rather I try and put out products or services that I would like as a customer, or try to reach my clients in ways others do not. I try to be different.”
Thank you Jeremy Russotti for being different.

The NorCal Finest Super 100
This is something long needed, a serious marrying of basketball skills development with strength and conditioning training featuring professionals at the top of their respective fields.
The morning session will include skill clinics by Jeremy Russotti and Nationally Recognized Specialist Alan Stein, with the afternoon featuring situational competitions plus games.
Best of all, it's free to the participants -- yes, free of charge. The plan is for this event to never have an entry fee:
What is the NorCal Finest?
The NorCal Finest Super 100 is an invitation only event for the top 100 basketball players in the NorCal Region. The event is the brainchild of 1% CLUB Basketball’s Jeremy Russotti, who is considered by many to be the top basketball skill specific trainer, as well as product developer in the United States.
He offers a variety of training services nationwide and internationally and his company, 1% CLUB Basketball, specializes in bringing functional basketball specific training and drills to help coaches and players maximize their potential.
Russotti explained, "I am excited to be a part of this wonderful event. I've had this vision for years. However, the only way I wanted the event to occur if it was 100% free to the players. Basketball training and product development has been a huge vehicle for me to meet new people, to travel to speaking engagements, to help players across the country and also work with professional clients. It is time to give back to NorCal and unite the talent we have and continually strive to get better."
Partnering with Del Monte Foods and Scholar Athletes INC, 1% CLUB Basketball is excited to make NorCal Finest Super 100 the premier event in the region - providing a resource for top players to further their commitment and achievement in the basketball arena.
1% CLUB Basketball and Scholar Athletes INC are working hard to show these players what it takes not only to reach and be successful in college, but also how to set goals and plans for their future professional careers.
Russotti explained, "NorCal has had an influx of talent recently that has gained national attention. With proper training and programs, I feel NorCal can be a hot bed in producing consistent NBA talent. We are hoping the NorCal Finest Super 100 event can be the facilitator for future programs, communication, and NorCal coming together for one purpose."
The NorCal Finest will no doubt bring greater awareness to the regions abundant student-athlete pool. Also, the event will include National Recognized Body Enhancement Specialist Alan Stein (Nike), as well as local coaches, putting on clinics for the players and local coaches in attendance. "Alan Stein is considered the top at what he does. If NorCal players want to reach an elite level, it is important to surround them with as many top professional minds as possible, and hopefully fire up their intrinsic motivation," Russotti said.
