Eric Bossi (a Rivals sub is required), in a piece about the rankings of a handful of prospects, wrote this about Malik Pope:

"Perhaps the most intriguing player in the class of 2014 is 6-foot-7 small forward Malik Pope. Opinions vary on the native of Sacramento, who is transferring to nearby Elk Grove (Calif.) Laguna Creek for his junior year.

Currently checking in as a five-star prospect and No. 14 nationally, if you catch him on a day when he's got it going, it's hard not to imagine him wearing a uniform with an NBA logo. He has range on his jump shot, can create for himself with the dribble, is a high-level athlete who beats people from rim to rim and shows potential on the defensive end. On the other hand, he's just as likely to have games in which he defers to teammates, is passive offensively and seems happy to just run up the court.

So what do you do with Pope in the rankings? After all, he just turned 16 in July and does many things that few wings can do. But his inconsistent and passive play at times is a worry as well. He's a tough call."

Noting a change in high schools

Missed this earlier -- it was posted June 20. MaxPreps has compiled a list of basketball players switching high schools and Darin Johnson is on it, moving from Franklin High to Sheldon High.

But keep in mind that also on the page is Malik Pope heading to Capital Christian and that was discounted a couple of days ago.

Hoopnik's 2014 rankings are out with Malik Pope coming in at #34. He's the only Nor Cal prospect listed.

A question goes out to all who do this -- how do you accurately rank 100 kids situated throughout close to every state of the country? What would be helpful, whether it be Hoopniks, Rivals, Scout, et al, is to list how many times a player is/must be viewed before a ranking is issued.

"So, to make a long answer short. In the near term it's a toss-up between [Isaac] Hamilton and [Stanley] Johnson, but looking five years down the road it shifts to a discussion between [Malik] Pope and [Marcus] Lee."

2014 Team Superstar small forward Malik Pope was limited to only a few touches, and, therefore was not able to produce on the court. Nevertheless, the highly recruited No. 14 player in the Rivals100 has a vast amount of scholarships on his plate. Pope holds offers from Arizona, Baylor, California, USC, UCLA, Washington and Colorado, among others. With no focus on his recruitment, Pope played in front of a number of high-majors for his morning game and continues to draw positive buzz on the west coast.

From Eric Bossi: "Class of 2014 five-star Malik Pope was the most talented prospect in either tournament. The near 6-foot-8 Pope is a pure wing with a lot of weapons at his disposal. He shoots with range, can handle the ball, makes things happen in transition and is a highly instinctive player. However, the one thing that Pope isn't, yet, is consistent. To take the next step with his game, Pope will have to become more consistently engaged in the action and be the aggressor. While he's capable of impacting the game in several ways and generally plays hard, Pope can at times be passive on the offensive end where he has the tools to be a dominant scorer if he cleans up a few rough edges."

A five-star prospect that currently ranks No. 14 in the class of 2014, Malik Pope played up to his lofty reputation on Friday night. Hitting the floor with Team Superstar, the 6-foot-8 small forward displayed a high level of skill, athleticism and potential in front of a big crowd of coaches.

Among the mostly West Coast based programs on hand to watch Pope were Colorado (head coach Tad Boyle), Washington, Arizona, Arizona State, USC, Utah, Gonzaga, San Diego State, New Mexico and many more. They could often be seen shaking their heads after Pope made plays.

With the height of a power forward prospect, Pope is a long and lean wing with legitimate perimeter skill. He's a dangerous shooter out to the three point line and gets anywhere he needs to be on the floor within one or two dribbles. He's quick, he can pass, he can finish in transition and he plays hard on both ends of the floor.

Given that he won't turn 16 until the end of the month, he sometimes forces things and makes silly mistakes. But, there's a good chance that he's still got even more growing left to do. There are some good young wings on the West Coast, but Pope is firmly establishing himself as the best prospect in his neck of the woods from the class of 2014.

Malik Pope receiving national attention

Eric Bossi is the latest national analyst on the burgeoning Malik Pope bandwagon:

If they haven't already taken notice - and many of them have - the country's top programs should get themselves familiar with Malik Pope.

The 6-foot-7, class of 2014 wing from Sacramento is having a breakout spring and looks to be just scratching the surface of what he can do.

A fine athlete with exceptional quickness and fluid body control, Pope is rapidly becoming a tall wing capable of attacking from the wing in a half court setting. Already, he's a high level finisher on the break and along the baseline who can drain three-pointers.

Pope will make some mistakes, but that happens with a big kid who isn't used to having a lot of freedom on the perimeter. Also, it's important to note that Pope is pretty young for his class and won't turn 16 until July. So, he's got lots of developing to do physically and with his game.

Pope already has offers from Baylor, Washington, Gonzaga, Boise State, Colorado and UNLV, with interest from California and Arizona among others.
