Kendall Andrews, Newark Memorial get some love

Kendall Andrews has a knack for being in the right place at the right time. That was apparent a year ago when his close-range bank shot with two-tenths of a second left gave Salesian High its first state basketball title.

But now, Andrews qualifies as a certified good-luck charm. Even though he is just a junior, the 6-foot-4 forward is making his second consecutive trip to a state championship game. If that isn't rare enough, this time he's doing it at a different school — Newark Memorial, which plays Westchester-Los Angeles on Saturday night for the Division I boys title in Bakersfield.

Andrews grew up in the Fremont area, and after two years of making the tough daily commute to Salesian in Richmond, he decided it was time to stay close to home to go to school. In the fall, just before the start of the school year, he enrolled at Newark to play football and basketball...

Nor Cal earning some respect

The high school teams from this area who ventured south for the MaxPreps Holiday Classic are representing themselves and their home base quite well. Newark Memorial (Coach Craig Ashmore) whomped Fairfax 50-34 while Bishop O'Dowd (Coach Doug Vierra) got by Leuzinger 63-62.

We don't have the stats but Khion Sankey, Casey Norris and Kendall Andrews for the Cougars and Jordan Barton, Nick Capiti, Brandon Ashley and Richard Longrus for the Dragons must have contributed mightily.
