Newark Memorial High survived Thursday, and that's just fine with the Cougars after their 48-39 win over Castlemont in this California Interscholastic Federation Northern Region Division I quarterfinal.
"We gutted it out," Newark coach Craig Ashmore said. "This time of year you've just got to survive."
The third-seeded Cougars (28-4) will host unseeded Sheldon-Sacramento, a 59-57 upset winner over No. 2 Bellarmine, on Saturday at 7 p.m.
