Former Yuba College and Franklin High backcourter Julian Welch is playing less this season at Minnesota than last year with 3.7 points and 1.9 rebound averages thus far while shooting 35%, 25% and 64% overall. In 14 games (none as a starter), the senior has 15 steals and a 25-12 assists-to-turnover ratio on a 13-1 team.
In 2011-12, Welch was at just under 25 minutes a contest, averaging 9.5 points plus 2.4 rebounds per outing and shooting 47%, 44% and 77%. In 36 games (21 starts), he nabbed 38 steals and posted 105/82 assist-to-turnover numbers.
Yes, his shooting accuracy has fallen with less playing time (which can be understood but assists-to-turnover ratio is much better. Not sure how to specifically account for that but he is surrounded by better talent this season.
