West Campus sounds like a nice bucolic setting, one well suited as a learning environment. It is indeed heralded for its academics, at least the one located in Sacramento is and, sooner or later, the boys basketball program is going to deservedly earn similar recognition for its on-court success.
The reasons? Try consecutive years of 19-11, then 29-6 plus 20-9 thus far and 10-2 in the Golden Empire League in the 2016-17 season under Coach Fred Wilson. The Warrior players are readied for college through the strong scholastic footing at West Campus and the development of their hoops skills in the gym.
This season, the key players for the Warriors includes just one senior:
* Eric Alston, 5-foot-8, sophomore (14.0 points, 5.2 assists, 4.3 rebounds)
* Inderpal Dhaliwal, 6-foot-2, senior (11.8 points)
* Nate Karren, 6-foot-9, junior (16.4 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.2 blocks)
* Harmon Khela, 6-foot-5, junior (7.7 points)
* Dee Juan Pruitt, 6-foot-6, sophomore (8.2 points, 8.4 rebounds, 1.3 blocks)
* Quincy Taylor, 6-foot-1, freshman (9.4 points, 4.4 rebounds)
According to Wilson, "Alston will be a nice D1 guard, Dhaliwal will likely play at the NAIA level and Karren is hearing from BYU, Northern Arizona and Sacramento State among others. Taylor will play after high school and Pruitt possesses an amazing wingspan and nearly averages a double-double."
Karren has a 3.8 grade point average and is the best three-point shooter on the squad.
But it's not just the present group of Warriors ready and able to move on. Benefitting from skill development and success on the court as well as the necessary foundation to succeed in the classroom, recent West High graduates who have gone on to play college basketball include:
* guard Darien Davis, Oregon's Blue Mountain Community College
* forward Sanford Del Mar, Central Wyoming College
* guard Kevin Dent, Notre Dame de Namur
* forward Monty Khela, Colorado School of Mines
* guard Jeryn Lucas, Humboldt State
* guard Marcus Muccular, UC Santa Cruz
Plus, 6-foot-6 Isaiah Bates of the 2016 class will be back on the court after rehabilitating from an injury.
Wilson summed up the state of his program, offering "the present is bright and the future is bright." He is proving that academic achievement and athletic success can go together. The evidence is in the successful movement of his players to the collegiate level.
Someone pretty famous once said, "Truly I tell you no prophet is accepted in his hometown." The Warrior program is simply looking for greater respect for their on-going achievements. Is SacTown willing and able to do so?

Two former Fresno City College players honored
"One day after winning the North Star Athletic Association Tournament Championship, the Bellevue University men's basketball team saw two student-athletes as well as its coach honored in the NSAA's Post-Season Awards Program.
Junior guard BJ Shelton (Bakersfield, Calif.) collected three awards as he was named NSAA Most Valuable Player, Newcomer of the Year, and First Team All-NSAA. Shelton leads the team in scoring at 14.9 points per game, free throw percentage (61.8%), and started a team-high 30 games on the year. His 5.0 rebounds per game rank second on the team and he is one of five players averaging better than one assist per game. In league play he averaged 16.1 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.
Junior guard Nick Hilton (Sacramento, Calif.) earned Second Team All-NSAA distinction. Hilton leads Bellevue with 93 three-pointers, a 44.3 shooting percentage behind the arc, and is tied for tops on the team with 20 steals. He ranks second in scoring at 11.5 points per game, second in assists (82), and third in free throw percentage (82.5%). In league play he averaged 12.2 points and 3.1 assists per game while knocking down a team-leading 48 three-pointers..."

Golson honored
CCAA Men's Basketball Player of the Week
Vincent Golson
"Golson, a guard from Oakland, shot 54 percent from the field, including a 50 percent effort from three point range, and 88 percent from the free throw line to lead the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball team to a perfect 2-0 weekend and the program's best regular-season finish since the 2010-11 season.
In Friday's 84-75 win over Cal State San Marcos, Golson totaled 20 points and dished out five assists. The following night, Golson scored a career-high 32 points, shooting seven-for-10 from the field, five-for-six from the three-point line, and shooting 13-for-14 from the charity stripe.
Overall, Golson averaged 26 points, 5.5 assists, 3.5 rebounds, and a steal per game."
Patterson honored
Jalen Patterson (Liberty Ranch, Galt) Fr.
"While he is just a freshman and will have plenty more games with the Hawks, it may be hard to top Patterson’s performance when No. 6 seed Liberty Ranch defeated the No. 3 seed Calaveras of San Andreas 82-67 in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV playoffs.
Facing a Calaveras team that had won its last 17 games at home and their last home loss coming over 400 days ago, Patterson knocked down 10 three-pointers and finished with 34 points. More amazingly, he was 10 of 11 from three-point range with several of his treys coming from way behind the line, according to former CIF SJS assistant commissioner John WIlliams, who witnessed the performance. Patterson missed his first attempt, then made 10 in a row.
Averaging 17 points per game this season, Patterson’s previous season and career-high was 27 points, which came during a loss to McKinleyville."

“If you don’t go for pump fakes and stay down, they don’t have guys who can beat you off the dribble. They’re like a boxer who is always trying to counterpunch you. If you make a mistake, they stick you in the eye. I don’t know if their guys are selfish enough sometimes. [Jock] Landale is tough as heck. It’s better not to double team him and just dig and stay at home, because if you double him you get into rotation, and he finds shooters.
They’re kind of like a pack line team defensively. They limit you to one shot. Everybody rebounds, including the guards. That’s a big thing for them. But they’ll have problems with quick guards. Look at what UT-Arlington did to them. It’s obvious Randy doesn’t trust his bench. You have to make Joe Rahon finish as best you can, because he’s a pass-first guy. Calvin Hermanson is an elite shooter with size and a quick release. You want to get him to put it on the floor. A really athletic team can get them in positions where they have to take hard shots. They’re not a hard-shot-making team, they’re an easy-shot-making team.”"

A Donald Mims feature
"MIMS: SOMETHING SPECIAL IN THE AIR" -- Matt Schwab
"Las Positas College center Donald Mims can’t help but stand out in a crowd. He’s 7-feet tall.
But success on the basketball court takes more than height. There’s preparation, teamwork, footwork, physical strength, controlling emotions, and much more. It's a tall order.
Toward that end, the slim Mims is thriving in coach James Giacomazzi’s program. He's a shot-blocking machine who runs the floor like a guard.
“I love Donald. I’ve known Donald since he was 14 years old and he could barely bench press a toothpick and two olives,” Giacomazzi quipped. “He can run. He can block shots. He can change so many shots. He does so many good things.”
Mims is modest too. After Friday’s 79-61 win over Foothill in which he scored a season-high 20 points, 12 more than his average, and pulled down 15 rebounds, he dished off credit.
“My teammates helped me,” the Central High-Sacramento graduate said. “We worked as a team. We worked together to make sure we do dominate in the paint.”
In the first half, Mims, who was 8 for 10 from the floor overall, attacked the basket with vigor from a variety of angles and altered Foothill’s offensive mindset with devastating explosiveness -- and a gleam in his eye.
He was hit with a technical for hanging on the rim after a dunk, when he appeared to be trying to preserve his ankles.
Mims’ fellow power broker Stokley Chaffee had 13 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks in the Hawks’ 19th win of the season.
Mims, like guard Caleb Baskett, plays with a lot of passion.
“Caleb and Donald are emotional players and we love that about them, but we just try to harness it for good and not for evil,” Giacomazzi said. “We love the passion and the energy that Donald and Caleb bring. They are really strong components to what we are doing this year.”
Giacomazzi and Mims successfully teamed as coach and player at Cosumnes River, winning the Big 8 title in 2014-15 when Mims averaged 4.4 blocks and shot 58 percent from the floor.
Mims is averaging 4.1 blocks this season, and if he keeps his emotions in check down the stretch, look out Coast-North.
“He just needs to continue to be aggressive and not be where like something can take him out of a game,” Giacomazzi said.
Mims says his main objective is to protect the paint on defense, which in turn generates offensive opportunities on the opposite end. He agrees that he has become increasingly more assertive this season.
“Yeah, exactly. It’s all coming together,” he said. “We’re all getting better and better every single game as a team. When we go to practice and everything, things seem to click better.”
Mims came to Las Positas from Midland College in Odessa, Texas, where he transferred to from Cosumnes River.
A hard worker in the gym, Mims says his doctor tells him his metabolism is so high that he won’t be able to gain as much weight as he wants.
He says he “tries to be faster than the rest of the ‘bigs,’ because I have speed and stuff like that. Strength is not a factor so I have to use my speed more.”
The dynamic Hawks occasionally can go into lulls on offense against well-constructed defenses, but they can also go on Golden State Warriors-style runs in the blink of an eye.
Should the Hawks ever falter in a game, Giacomazzi let's them know about it.
“Coach tells us when we’re doing that, for sure,” Mims said. “He doesn’t like that at all. He doesn’t like any slacking. He’ll see that a little bit and he’ll go crazy. You’ll see him on the bench. He’ll go bananas over there.”
Emotions aside, Giacomazzi has been effective at showing players proper techniques in person and on film, to help them sort out the puzzles.
“He’ll give us every strategy he can,” Mims said. “He just wants us to have positive attitudes, stuff like that.”
All things seem positive these days for the Hawks.
As for Mims, he’ll be ready to rise -- real high -- to the challenge again on Wednesday night against Ohlone."
