Vaughn and Seeley not enough for Fullerton

Fullerton lost at Hawaii 90-88 last night despite 26 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals from Kwame Vaughn plus 22 points and eight boards from D.J. Seeley. The Titans shot 51% but allowed UH to connect at a 56% rate.

The Nor Cal Titans

Cal State University Fullerton has so many players from the upper half of the Golden State that some sort of special recognition needs to be given, hence our headline.

For example:

* Kwame Vaughn leads the team with 19 points and 5.2 rebounds per game and is shooting 50%, 43% and 87% respectively. He has also played the most minutes.

* D.J. Seeley comes in at 18.4 points and 3.9 boards per game, alongside a tops-on-the-team 50 assists and 28 steals. He is shooting 50%, 37% and 83% respectively.

* Sammy Yeager is scoring 14.3 points and garnering 4.5 rebounds each time out while shooting 46%, 45% and 74% respectively.

Each of the above has started all 12 Titan games thus far this season.

* Alex Harris is posting 9.8 points plus 4.5 boards nightly on 47%, 46% and 67% shooting respectively.

Fullerton rolls

In an exhibition last night, Cal State Fullerton took down Hope International 87-65 with DJ Seeley totaling 19 points (plus eight rebounds and four assists) while Kwame Vaughn tallied 18 (plus eight boards and six assists).

Fullerton by seven

Cal State Fullerton went to the Lone Star State and took down Texas Southern 93-86 yesterday. D.J. Seeley totaled 27 points (11-14 shooting) plus seven assists while Kwame Vaughn contributed 16 and Sammy Yeager enjoyed 13 points. Backcourter Alex Harris led the Titans with seven boards.

Former CCSF frontcourter Fred Sturdivant was the show for the Houston-ites, with 22 points and eight rebounds.

UW two better than Fullerton

It was host Washington 74-72 over Cal State Fullerton. UW trailed 43-29 at halftime.

Desmond Simmons posted an 18/14 double-double for the Huskies.

Titan-wise, D.J. Seeley totaled 24 points while nabbing five steals. Fellow backcourter Alex Harris scored 14 points on 6-10 shooting.

The Big Three for Fullerton

Percy Allen previews the Big Three for Cal State Fullerton as the Titans take on Washington today:

Fifth-year senior guard D.J. Seeley (right), last year's leading scorer at 17.3 points per game, returns to the starting lineup and many believe he'll be the Big West MVP. He averaging 18.7 points this season and has a 32-point performance against Southern Utah. He's shooting 50.7 percent from the field, 38.7 on three-pointers and 82.4 percent at the line.

Seeley began his career at California and played two seasons for the Golden Bears before transferring and sitting out the 2010-11 season. In his first year with the Titans last season he was picked the Big West Newcomer of the Year. Seeley was named to the preseason all-Big West team

--- Fifth-year senior guard Kwame Vaughn is the Titans' other returning starter and he leads them in scoring with 19.0 points per game. His season high is 29. He was a second-team all-conference pick last season.

Vaughn averages 31.5 minutes and he's shooting 52.4 percent from the field, 47.8 percent on three pointers and 86 percent on free throws.

--- Transfer Sammy Yeager (TCU) is the only other Cal State Fullerton player averaging double-digit scoring at 15.0 points per game. He's shooting 53.6 percent on three-pointers (15 of 28).

EW over Fullerton

Cal State Fullerton traveled up to the Evergreen State to take on Eastern Washington and the hosts held on 7975 on Friday.

Kwame Vaughn went for 22 points for the Titans and D.J. Seeley contributed 21 points and six boards.

Collin Chiverton was absent for EW: "...He took the place of starter Collin Chiverton, who returned to his hometown of San Francisco because of the death of a close friend. A month ago, his mother passed away...."

Fullerton romps

Host Cal State Fullerton pasted San Diego Christian 106-60 last night with a quartet of Nor Cal talents contributing: Sammy Yeager - 15 points, D.J. Seeley - 15, Kwame Vaughn - 12 and Alex Harris - 10.

Cal State Fullerton splattered Southern Utah 112-59 last night in Reno with D.J. Seeley totaling 32 points (10-13 shooting) plus seven assists and seven steals.

Kwame Vaughn contributed 19 with Alex Harris scoring 15 (5-5 from long distance) and Sammy Yeager adding 14.

Fullerton falls short

Cal State Fullerton and host Nevada played a close one last night with the Reno-ites winning 80-77.

Kwame (Skyline High) Vaughn led the Titans with 20 points while Sammy (Modesto High) Yeager added 19 points plus seven boards.

DJ (Modesto Christian High) Seeley contributed 13 points and six assists. With an extended period of court time (26 minutes), Alex (El Cerrito High) Harris produced 12 points and four rebounds.

Cal State Fullerton falls to Stanford

Cal State Fullerton traveled up to The Farm last night and Coach Johnny Dawkins' squad proved too much to the tune of 81-68.

Kwame Vaughn helped all-around in the loss with 12 points, five boards, a trio of assists and a pair of steals. Sammy Yeager and DJ Seeley led with 16 points apiece. Yeager paced the Titans with nine boards.

Kwame Vaughn's 20 points (and five rebounds plus five assists) powered Cal State Fullerton to an 86-47 victory over Cal State Los Angeles. D.J. Seeley contributed 16 points/four assists. Sammy (Modesto High) Yeager also started for the Titans. Alex (El Cerrito High) Harris was on the court for 31 minutes.

Seeley’s offensive exploits were overshadowed by Long Beach State’s cadre of players and UC-Santa Barbara’s scoring duo. However, he’s now the big-time scorer in the Big West. He is a lights-out shooter from behind the arc, and is also able to get by his defender and score in the lane or get fouled.

Seeley made the most of his first year at CSF after sitting out a year (transfer from California).  He thrives in a fast paced game, but has shown the ability to attack the basket in halfcourt offenses.  He has a very good first step and gets into the lane quickly, with the ability to finish with either hand.  Seeley is also a good spot-up shooter from long-range, having a quick, fluid stroke.  He is active on the boards for his size, and is quick to get to missed shots.  He is a good on-ball defender, moving his feet well and forcing his man away from the basket area.  He can either push the ball or run the wings in transition, and is quick to the basket.
What he needs to show this season: Seeley is quick and moves well, but I want to see him do a better job moving without the ball, looking to hit open spots and create separation from his man.  Also, I want to see him improve his ballhandling enough to where he can use his dribble to create space for his jumper, as well as create shots for his teammates.  He needs to start to add a mid-range jumper to his offensive arsenal, as he will not get into the lane as easily at the next level.  On the defensive end, Seeley has to be more conscious of his positioning off the ball.  He has a tendency to roam and get turned around against motion offenses.

Cal State Fullerton's season has ended with an 88-79 loss to Loyola Marymount. D.J. Seeley went for 32 points plus eight rebounds while Kwame Vaughn contributed 21 and seven in the losing cause.

Irvine upsets Fullerton

UC Irvine handled higher ranked Cal State Fullerton -- #7 versus #2 -- 65-59 in a Big West Conference Thursday afternoon quarterfinal pairing. Anteater Chris McNealy scored 24 points to top all scorers as D.J. Seeley and Kwame Vaughn totaled 12 points apiece for the Titans.
