The Simmons led-Huskies top the Cougars

It was Desmond Simmons for the defense yesterday as Washington took down rival Washington State 68-63. Percy Allen reports on the victory that was propelled by the efforts of the junior.

Barring a minor miracle for Cal Poly, the Huskies will win their third straight game. Simmons may have given the play of the game. On a N’Diaye miss, he crawled on the floor for the loose ball and got control of the rock. Then he passed to Andrews sank a running jumper. The bench erupted in cheers. UW 65-48, 2:50.

NICE OVATION — Simmons went the bench and received a round of applause from the fans. On the previous play, he deflected a pass and jumped out of bounds trying to save the ball. UW 41-29, 12:10.

Washington too much for Jackson State

Jackson State was game but still fell to host Washington 75-67 last night.

Christian (Sierra High) Williams finished with 15 points (4-8 long distance shooting) for the Mississipians while Desmond (Salesian High) Simmons finished with five points, nine rebounds and four assists for UW.

UW falls to Nevada

Washington hosted Nevada last night and it was the Silver Staters by three at game's end, 76-73. Desmond Simmons grabbed 13 rebounds in 23 minutes of play but scored just one point.

Desmond Simmons got his second start and responded with his third game of double-digit rebounds. He had 13 after collecting a career-high 18 in the previous game. Simmons also had five on the offensive glass. Offensively, Simmons had his worst performance of the season. He missed all seven field goal attempts and finished with one point. However, defensively Simmons was outstanding. He also had two blocks in 23 minutes.

UW two better than Fullerton

It was host Washington 74-72 over Cal State Fullerton. UW trailed 43-29 at halftime.

Desmond Simmons posted an 18/14 double-double for the Huskies.

Titan-wise, D.J. Seeley totaled 24 points while nabbing five steals. Fellow backcourter Alex Harris scored 14 points on 6-10 shooting.

Washington win -- Simmons goes big

Washington went back east and faced Seton Hall late Saturday afternoon, coming away with an 84-73 overtime triumph. Desmond Simmons produced a 14/12 double-double.

Washington falls

Albany topped Washington 63-62 up in Alaska last night as the Huskies shot just 41% but won the battle of the boards 35-20.  

Desmond (Salesian High) Simmons contributed six points, six boards and one steal in 24 minutes.

"...The other matchup pitting Huskies against each other wasn't nearly as competitive as Andrew Andrews and Shawn Kemp Jr. overcame a monster effort from Desmond Simmons thanks to a big assist from a pair of former Rainier Beach High standouts.

The game underscored the difference between Simmons and Kemp who paired against each other and are vying for minutes in the post. Simmons began the game with two long three-pointers while Kemp flushed four power dunks after passes from Andrews.

Despite surrendering about 45 pounds and two inches to Kemp (6-9, 265), Simmons (6-7, 220) used quickness, guile and a freakish non-stop motor to score on putbacks and layups in transition. He finished with a team-high 29 points while Kemp and Andrews each had 11..."
