Davion Berry to Weber State

Former Hayward High star Davion Berry, who has torn up the California Collegiate Athletic Association the last two seasons with his scoring for Cal State Monterey Bay, has transferred to Weber State of the Big Sky Conference. He'll be joining former Oakland High backcourter Damian Lillard and forward Frank Otis, who played at McClymonds High.

Former Hayward High star Davion Berry is carrying on quite well at Cal State Monterey Bay. The sophomore was recently honored with his inclusion on the Division II Daktronics All-America second team -- the sole non-senior to be selected.

Cal State Monterey Bay sophomore Davion (Hayward High) Berry was recently named a First Team member of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

Likewise for San Francisco State's Nefi (Skyline High) Perdomo, a sophomore.

Sonoma State junior Steven (Foothill High) Pratt was a CCAA Second Team selection.

As was Casey (Argonaut High) Ryan, a senior at UC Santa Diego

Catching up with some former northern California prepsters

Demetrius (St. Mary's High) Lee is a freshman at Casper College in Wyoming. In 24 games, he is averaging 6.9 ppg. (33% overall shooting, 26% from three), 71% at the foul line, 2.3 rebounds a contest and 1.3 steals a game.

Similarly, Khion (Newark Memorial High) Sankey is a freshman at Sheridan College in Wyoming. In 25 games, Khion is averaging 4.0 ppg. (47% shooting) and 4.6 rpg.

Justin (McClymonds High) Standley is a freshman at Western Nebraska College. His numbers: 11.3 ppg. (37% overall shooting, 38% from long distance), 78% from the foul line, 3.5 assists and 3.8 rebounds a game.

Meanwhile, sophomore Davion (Hayward High) Berry is leading the Cal State Monterey Bay squad at 23.6 ppg. (43% overall shooting, 40% from the three-point line), 220 free throws attempted in 22 games, 5.2 rpg. (second on the team) and 26 steals (first on the team).

Senior Roderick (Jesuit High) Hawkins is the leading scorer for Chico State at 12.5 ppg. (shooting 52%) and also averaging 5.4 rpg.

Sophomore Demario (McClymonds High) Sims is Chico State's third leading scorer at 11.1 ppg.

Junior Jay (Jesuit High) Flores is scoring 10.6 ppg. for the Wildcats.

Sophomore Davion Berry scored a career high 41 points to lead Cal State Monterey Bay past visiting Cal State San Bernardino, 82-80, on Saturday night at the Kelp Bed.

"We had a great team effort tonight," said head coach Rob Bishop. "Berry carried us when we needed baskets but we got a great team effort from the entire team. Our rebounding and defense was much better tonight."

Berry had a team-high seven rebounds along with two assists. The scoring was spread among eight other players with sophomores Derrick Anderson and Brandon Ward contributing 11 and 10 points respectively.

In a game that consisted of 20 lead changes and 15 ties, the Otters held the largest lead of the game at 74-69 with 3:12.

Berry sank a jumper with 21 seconds left to give CSUMB an 80-77 lead, but the Coyotes answered right back when Robbie Robinson connected on his first 3-pointer of the night with 13 seconds left on the clock. Anderson hit the game winning free throws after driving down the key and drawing a foul on the next possession. CSUMB’s strong defense held the Coyotes from scoring in the final six seconds.

Cal State Monterey Bay guard Davion Berry was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association’s (CCAA) men's basketball Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 24-30, it was announced on Monday.

"I am very proud of Davion for getting CCAA Player of the Week," said head coach #Rob Bishop. "He has been very consistent these past few weeks with not only scoring but rebounding too."

Berry, a sophomore from Oakland, Calif., had a big offensive weekend in helping the Otters gain a home split against Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino. He averaged 36.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.0 steals and a blocked shot while shooting 44.2 percent (19-of-43) from the field, including 7-of-16 (43.8) from behind the 3-point arc.

In a 74-65 setback to Cal Poly Pomona on Friday, Berry scored a game-high 32 points, collected nine rebounds, two assists, two steals and a blocked shot. He followed that performance with a career-high 41 points, on 11-of 25 (44.0) shooting, grabbed seven rebounds and had two assists during an 82-80 victory over Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday.

In two games so far this season, former Hayward High star Davion Berry is averaging 18 points a contest. The other highlights for the sophomore at Cal State University Monterey Bay: 20-24 at the foul line plus five assists and five rebounds a game.

Berry Named CCAA Freshman of the Year

Cal State Monterey Bay guard Davion Berry was named All-CCAA second team and Freshman of the Year, the California Collegiate Athletic Association announced today.

Berry, a freshman from Oakland, averaged 12.9 points and 1.8 assists per game.
He was ninth in the conference in scoring and steals (1.3).

In the first week of conference play, Berry was named CCAA Player of the Week after scoring 30 points against the Chico State Wildcats on Saturday, Dec. 5 at the Kelp Bed.

He nabbed his first double-double on Feb. 19 against the Pioneers of Cal State East Bay, finishing with 24 points and 12 rebounds.

“I cannot be more pleased for Davion,” said head coach Rob Bishop. “He was one of the best players in the league and I am excited that he was recognized as such. We are going young and trying to build a program the community can be proud of and Davion is a great example of what we are trying to accomplish on and off the court. He is a special player who will be fun to watch for the rest of career.”

"Not sure if you are familiar with this kid. He was the HAAL leading scorer and Co-MVP following his junior year at Hayward High. The kid can has game he was selected to participate in the Reebok all american game in Philly but had to attend summer school to work on his eligibility. He had interest from a handful of D-1 schools but there was some concerns about his eligibility. He ended up going to D-2 Cal State Monterey Bay and the school is happy to have him. Monterey's coach is saying he is the most exciting freshman to ever come through their program and that he has a chance at winning freshman of the year. Berry started his career off by scoring 18 points off the bench against D-1 Pacific, leading all scorers. He followed that performance by dropping 11 against D-1 USF. There is buzz about what this kid will do in his conference play. As a former Hayward High Alum I thought this kid deserved a shout out."
