Other games at West Valley College on Sunday

College of the Redwoods led 33-30 after 20 minutes but Monterey Peninsula College took the second half and won 68-55.

MPC 6-foot-9 freshman Ivo Basor displayed nice range in his face-up game, repeatedly connected on jumpers from the top of the key. Basor also showed good hands in catching passes on the way to the hoop when his guards penetrated and kicked it to him for layups.

Sophomore guard Zen Maki is machine-like when catching-and-shooting from distance. Paired with a point who can penetrate and then look for him best utilizes Maki's skills.

Diablo Valley College met tournament host West Valley College and it ended with the Vikings of the East Bay topping those of Santa Clara County, 71-62. It was 36-28 at the half.

How in the world was DVC's Mike Harris missed coming out of high school by D-I coaches? Opponents definitely want Harris shooting on the move because he's money catching-and-shooting. A quick shooting release aids his offensive prowess.

Also liked freshman point Jelani Hardaway -- long and with a touch to three-point range, it's easy to see him in D-I with continued improvement. Take it to the bank: Hardaway understands the term jumpstop after Sunday (you had to be there).

West Valley is the definition of scrappy. There's not a D-1 talent on Coach Scott Eitergeorge's roster but the Vikes will never be out-worked. They never backed down despite the odds. Standing 8-5 on the season is a testimony to what buy-in and effort can accomplish.

DVC nabs tourney title

Diablo Valley College won its own Chevron Invitational tourney, topping Umpqua (Oregon) on Sunday 65-50. The Vikings are now 5-1 so far this season, on a five-game win streak.

For DVC on Sunday, it was:

A Raphael Carter update

Brad Winton posted: "Raphael Carter, a 6-9 forward/center out of Diablo Valley CC in California, is waiting on his final summer grades to be posted before he makes a decision. Carter will know early next week whether he graduates and qualifies for the NCAA D1 level. Carter originally signed with Nevada, but was released from his NLI. He now has offers from Rhode Island, Bowling Green and Oakland."

But fret not DVC fans for a young but hungry squad, one that will only get better as the season goes on, will be taking the court this season.

Mike Harris is back

6-foot-4 Mike Harris headed off to Cal Lutheran University last year and produced 9.5 points and 5.3 rebounds a game as a freshman for the Kingsmen. The former Monte Vista High talent obviously adjusted quickly to college hoops, finishing third on his team in scoring and second in rebounding.

But the overall fit down south wasn't quite what Harris desired.

So he decided to make a change and will be playing for Diablo Valley College (DVC) Coach Steve Coccimiglio in 2012-13.

"Cal Lutheran was great, my teammates were great and I had a lot of fun," Harris offered. "But it wasn't what I was looking for in a college experience."

On the court, Harris was a post player -- "mainly playing down low." He started 23 of 24 games, averaging just under 30 minutes a contest.

He added, "I took a lot of time thinking about my options and then made my decision."

With DVC, he'll be positioned on the wing which "will be better for my strengths."

It will be a reunion of sorts as longtime Monte Vista Coach Bill Powers has left that position and is working as a assistant for Coccimiglio.

Diablo Valley College loses it's top two scorers in Brian Goins and Ronnie Baker, so Coccimiglio will need point production from his group of returnees and newcomers.

Harris will have the opportunity to publicly display his talents for DVC at the Foothill College JUCO Summer Slam on July 13-14.

Carter and Nevada parting

Marcus Hall scored 16 points plus Tomas Sanchez and Alex Perez added 14 apiece in Fresno City College's win over Diablo Valley College. Sanchez added seven rebounds, five assists and four steals. FCC hosts Cabrillo College next.
