Foothill wins championship

In a version of small or smallish ball if you will, Ohlone College and Foothill College met Sunday in the championship game of the West Valley tournament and it was the latter triumphing in overtime 75-72 in a pairing where neither team deserved a loss.

Foothill's freshman Stephen Grosey (more on him later) tied the game in regulation 65 apiece with a trey from the left corner (this after missing a three-pointer from the top of the key seconds earlier).

Ohlone jumped a head by two to open the scoring in overtime. Foothill came back with two straight baskets and then Ohlone tied the game back up. The Los Altos Hills Owls scored another bucket which was followed by the Renegades making one of two free throws. Foothill then got another deuce on a goal-tending call to stretch the lead to three, 73-70.

Backcourter Jarrad Jackson scored on a layup with 8.8 seconds remaining for the Renegades, making the score 73-72 in favor of Foothill.

6-foot-8 Daan Mutsaers was fouled by Ohlone, went to the foul line, and netted a pair of free throws, putting Foothill ahead 75-72 with 7.5 seconds on the clock.

Fredrik Boehn, a 6-foot-6 frosh, then missed a tough shot at the end for Ohlone.

6-foot-9 freshman Henry McCarthy was a bright light for Ohlone Coach John Peterson. His faceup jumper around and beyond the three-point line is a must-guard or else.

Foothill's Stephen Grosey is but a freshman but already the go-to guy for Coach Shanan Rosenberg. He's not long for Foothill College as a long and lanky, put-the-ball-on-the-floor, getting the ball to cutters to the basket, long distance shooting talent.

Ohlone takes tourney

As seems fitting, host Ohlone College took the championship of the Jonathan Wallace Tournament, downing Sacramento City College 67-64.

Coach John Peterson's squad was down by 17 in the second half and Jarrad Jackson, a 5-foot-11 sophomore out of Australia, scored 17 of his 23 points in the second 20 minutes and enjoyed three treys. No, he doesn't wear #17 on his jersey.

Chris Read scored 12 points.

Jackson and Read were named Co-MVPs.

Ryan Mastella, a sophomore out of Oak Ridge High, had a hot night for Sacto, sinking eight three-pointers on his way to 27 points. Freshman Patrick Lowman contributed 12.

Ohlone and Lassen win again

At the Jonathan Wallace Tournament, Lassen College topped Monterey Peninsula College 69-65 while Ohlone had no trouble with San Joaquin Delta 65-47, all in the semifinals.

In the latter, Chris (Castro Valley High) Read again led the way, this time with 20 points.

Ohlone and Cabrillo begins victorious

Ohlone College topped Solano College 63-48 yesterday in the opening round of the Jonathan Wallace Tournament.

Sophomore Chris (Castro Valley High) Read paced Ohlone with 15 points while freshman Casey (Newark Memorial High) Norris contributed 15.

Sophomores Mike (Granite Bay High) Stockton totaled 14 (four treys) and LeQuan (Fairfield High) Gomes 11 for Solano.

Coach John Peterson's squad now goes up against Delta.

Cabrillo College, paced by 19 poins from Colin Gruber, bested Feather River 56-55 and now goes up against Sacramento City College. Sac City topped Cañada College 60-57.

Toivonen the latest signee for Ohlone

From Ohlone Coach John Peterson:

Ohlone College freshman Lauri Toivonen has signed with D-1 University of Texas, Pan American. The 6-foot-7, 220 pound four man was a first team all-conference selection at Ohlone as a freshman, after averaging 10 points and six rebounds per contest. He shot 52% from the field, 75% from the foul line line and played over 30 minutes a night. 


Toivonen came to Ohlone from Riihimaki, Finland.  He played for KOUVOT KOUVOLA prior to attending Ohlone, as well as competing on both the Under 20 National team at the 2011 European Championships and World University Games in China last August. 


He will have three years of eligibility remaining and will be majoring in civil engineering. In addition to his excellent play on the floor, Lauri had a 3.89 GPA.


“Lauri is by far one of the three toughest players I have coached in my 20 years on the college level, and easily has the highest basketball IQ. I am really pleased that he was able to turn his one year investment at Ohlone into a great three year deal at UTPA. Their style of play (triangle offense) suits him perfectly as it is the national team offense in Finland. I’m certain he will have great success on and off the court.”


Lauri is the sixth Renegade to move on this year, and the 82nd in the last 12 years. Others from this season include Mihk McKinney (Sacramento State), Oivind Lundestad (Point Loma Nazarene), Geoff Hartman (Notre Dame de Namur), Terrance Swayne (Holy Names) and Nick Clarke (U. of New Brunswick).

Ohlone's John Peterson heading to China

A note from Ohlone College Coach John Peterson:

"I will be the head coach of a team of USA All Stars in in the "Men's National B Team" Invitational Tournament in China June 28 through July 10, 2012. 

The teams in the event are host team China, Lithuania, and Germany along with our USA team. My assistant, Justin Carter, will be assisting with the team as well.

It will be a very competitive event consisting of 9 games in 12 days, 3 games held in each of 3 different cities around China (Liuzhou, Taiyuan and Guangzhou). We'll play Germany, Lithuania, and China in each city and have one day of travel between cities for 9 total games. It is a great event that is much like an Olympic style of format with "opening ceremonies," a parade of teams, and national anthems for all the countries. Typical attendance is somewhere between 8,000-10,000 per night.

The National B Team format is not one the USA typically uses because we have NBA players on our Olympic Team. However, a lot of other countries do use this system. The B Team is made up of players who were recently cut from the London Olympics squad or who are future National Team members for the 2014 World Championships or 2016 Brazil Olympics.  The players representing the USA include three recent college graduates who just finished playing NCAA Division One, and rest are either playing professionally in European leagues or in the NBA Development League.  Their motivation is obviously to represent the United States as well as to try and secure a professional contract either in the USA or abroad.

Support the “Zoe Inciong So Things Don’t Suck” fund + Ohlone College basketball

Dear Friends, Family and Ohlone College fans:

Every year, college basketball coaches around the country show their support in the fight against cancer by hosting “Coaches vs. Cancer” Nights.

Typically these events involve a “White Out” (everyone in white shirts), with the money going to cancer research. This Saturday, the men's and women's basketball teams at Ohlone will be participating for the first time, and our aim is twofold.

We have elected to "adopt" the Inciong family, and in particular their daughter Zoe. Zoe is a 15 year old sophomore at James Logan High School, a member of the water polo and basketball teams, and she happens to have a very rare form of bone cancer called Ewing's Sarcoma.

Her initial diagnosis in September was stage 4, and she is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatments twice a month at Oakland Kaiser hospital to help reduce the tumors in her pelvic and back areas. The proceeds from the gate for both games will go towards the fund established by her parents in Zoe's name to help defray the costs of medical expenses.

Secondly, we are trying to set an attendance record for both teams.  Capacity in our gym is 1,700 and we hope to fill every seat, hopefully with everyone wearing white. The more people we have, the more money we can raise.

The men's team is currently ranked 14th in the state and hosts the 20th ranked Las Positas College Hawks at 1 p.m., and the women are ranked 8th in the state and host Mission College at 3 p.m. It is the final regular season home game for both teams, and hopefully both will host a home playoff game the weekend of the 24th. Both groups of student-athletes work extremely hard on and off the court, and they deserve to play in front of a sold out crowd at some point in their junior college careers.

We would also like to ask that you pass this email on to as many people as possible (school groups, yahoo groups, Twitter, Facebook, youth sports groups/teams). We think this is a great opportunity to not only see some high quality college basketball but to also reach out as a community to help one of our own.

Ticket prices are $10 for adults (12 and over) and $5 for kids under 12 and students (high school or college). Season passes will be honored, but we ask that you kindly make a donation at the door. Thank you for your support and we look forward to seeing you and your family this weekend!
