Cabrillo handles Hartnell

SEAHAWKS WIN 9TH IN A ROW, BEAT HARTNELL 52-41

The Cabrillo College Seahawks won tonight 52-41 on the road in Salinas against Hartnell College (9-11, 3-4) and extended their winning streak to nine games. Cabrillo (17-3, 7-0) started slowly but figured it out as Tyler Velasquez scored 11 first-half points to help give the Seahawks a 34-15 halftime lead.

The second half was difficult to watch as both teams struggled shooting the ball from the perimeter. But again, the Seahawks played outstanding defense. holding Hartnell to only 12 field goals for the game and but five in the first half. No Hartnell player scored more than 9 points on the night.

Aaron Short lead all scorers with 16 points. Tyler Velasquez scored 11 points (all in the first half). Frank Rogers and CJ Grigg both helped out both helped out with 8 each.

Cabrillo over Hartnell

The Cabrillo College Seahawks opened Coast Conference South play tonight with a 59-49 win over Hartnell College. 

Cabrillo (now 11-3, 1-0) jumped on the Panthers (now 6-8, 0-1) early holding them without a basket untill the 14-minute mark and found themselves up 22-8 with 8 minutes to go.

But Hartnell wasn't done because the Seahawks had their own struggles shooting the ball.

It was 31-23 at the half.

In the second 20 minutes, Cabrillo could not pull away. Hartnell cut the lead to 3 -- 43-40 -- with 3:23 to go but could get no closer.

Aaron Short led the Seahawks in scoring with 21 points. Thomas Pierce totlaed 12 and Frank Rogers contributed 11.

FOUR SEAHAWKS HONORED, DURAN NAMED CONFERENCE MVP

Cabrillo College sophomore guard Markus Duran was voted MVP of the Coast Conference South. Duran becomes only the second player in Cabrillo College history to be voted as MVP -- Aaron Patterson won the award in 2007. 

The 6-foot-3 Duran averaged 19.8 points per game, shothot 35% from three-point range and 85% from the free throw line. He lead the state the last two years in three point field goals made for the season.

6-foot-5 sophomore center Bert Hall was selected to the 2nd team All-Coast Conference South. Hall averaged 10 points and nearly 8 rebounds a game for the Seahawks. More impressively, Hall was one of the keys for the Seahawks defensively as Hall took 32 charges in 27 games.

Also, freshman point guard Tyler Velasquez and freshman forward Aaron Short were both named Honorable Mention.

LPC gets bid to NorCal playoffs, faces Yuba

For the second time in their five-year history, the Hawks have been selected to play in the Northern California playoffs.

LPC, which finished the regular season with a 16-12 record, was named the regional bracket's 10th seed Monday and will face No. 7 Yuba at 7 p.m. Friday in Marysville.

Buoyed by a stong schedule and some key non-conference victories, LPC was seeded higher than five teams with better overall records. City College of San Francisco, the Coast Conference North Division champion, earned the top seed. Fresno, a likely opponent of the LPC-Yuba winner, is the second seed.

ppearance, a 20-point loss to Chabot in 2008. To beat Yuba, LPC will need a strong defensive effort against a 49ers team that averages 84.9 points a game.
