Other games at West Valley College on Sunday

College of the Redwoods led 33-30 after 20 minutes but Monterey Peninsula College took the second half and won 68-55.

MPC 6-foot-9 freshman Ivo Basor displayed nice range in his face-up game, repeatedly connected on jumpers from the top of the key. Basor also showed good hands in catching passes on the way to the hoop when his guards penetrated and kicked it to him for layups.

Sophomore guard Zen Maki is machine-like when catching-and-shooting from distance. Paired with a point who can penetrate and then look for him best utilizes Maki's skills.

Diablo Valley College met tournament host West Valley College and it ended with the Vikings of the East Bay topping those of Santa Clara County, 71-62. It was 36-28 at the half.

How in the world was DVC's Mike Harris missed coming out of high school by D-I coaches? Opponents definitely want Harris shooting on the move because he's money catching-and-shooting. A quick shooting release aids his offensive prowess.

Also liked freshman point Jelani Hardaway -- long and with a touch to three-point range, it's easy to see him in D-I with continued improvement. Take it to the bank: Hardaway understands the term jumpstop after Sunday (you had to be there).

West Valley is the definition of scrappy. There's not a D-1 talent on Coach Scott Eitergeorge's roster but the Vikes will never be out-worked. They never backed down despite the odds. Standing 8-5 on the season is a testimony to what buy-in and effort can accomplish.

Two prep players headed to MPC?

Forgot to note this yesterday:

* Stephen Dorsey, senior, Monterey: The 6-4 Dorsey is one of only two repeaters to our All-County team, Noah Allen being the other.

Dorsey put his leaping ability to work on both ends of the court. He averaged 12.5 points per game in the MBL to go along with 10.5 rebounds and 3.4 blocks per game.

"He was the centerpiece of our team," Monterey coach Gregg Daniels said. "He controlled the paint. Even when he was scoring 11 or 12 points per game, he was getting 12 to 15 rebounds and making five or six blocks.

"And when he wasn't making blocks he was forcing kids into trying some crazy shots. Sometimes it seemed like he was on a trampoline the way he skied above everyone."

As Daniels said last year about Dorsey, "I don't think I've ever coached a kid who could jump like that before."

Look for Dorsey to be playing basketball for Monterey Peninsula College next year.

* Brandon Hanson, senior, Monterey: The 6-foot Hanson, who comes from a military family, transferred to Monterey just in time.

He played a key role in helping the Toreadores finish with the best overall record of any team between Monterey and Santa Cruz counties at 22-4.

A strong contender for Monterey Bay League MVP honors, Hanson averaged 17.2 points per game overall and 19.8 per game in the MBL.

He also averaged with 3.5 assists and three steals per game.

Hanson said he'll probably play for MPC next year.

"He played so darn hard all the time," Daniels said. "He could rebound and go coast-to-coast. He was tenacious on both ends of the court. At time he was like instant offense. He could press teams and get five to six steals. His anticipation was real good." 

Cabrillo 77, MPC 58

CABRILLO FINISHES PERFECT WITH 77-58 WIN AT MPC

The Cabrillo College Seahawks made Cabrillo College basketball history tonight with an impressive 77-58 win over Monterey Peninsula College in Monterey. Cabrillo (22-3, 12-0) finished Coast Conference South play undefeated for the first time in school history. The Seahawks jumped all over MPC (13-14, 7-5) tonight behind nine three-point baskets. Cabrillo went in at the half up 41-25.

In the second half, MPC came out on fire hitting their first six shots and cut into the lead. The Seahawks came back with a run of their own and pushed the lead to as many as 20 midway thru the second half. The lead was never threatened after that point.

Aaron Short lead all scorers with 20 points. Tyler Velasquez scored 19 and four other scored 8 points (Frank Rogers, Dalton Noble, Joe Saarem and Thomas Pierce).

Next, the Seahawks will take their 14 game winning streak into the NorCal Community College State Tournament. The bracket will be announced Monday (Feb. 20) in the afternoon.

MPC 66, Hartnell 61

George Watkins has the details of the Monterey Peninsula College triumph over host Hartnell last night. Andrew Young led MPC with a 15/10 double-double despite missing time with an ankle sprain.

Another double-double from Andrew Young paced Monterey Peninsula College to a win over Ohlone:

Andrew Young had 28 points and 17 rebounds to lead MPC. Shayne Perryman added 17 points and hit five 3s, and Conor Byrne had seven points and 13 assists for the Lobos.

An update on MPC's Andrew Young

6-foot-9 Andrew Young was relatively unknown this season because he redshirted last year while at Monterey Peninsula College but now any degree of anonymity has completely disappeared. Being the leading total scorer and rebounder in the state, coupled with his size, will do that.

Early on, it was primarily mid and low majors with an awareness of and definite interest in Young and his capabilities. Sacramento State, UC Riverside, Cal Poly, San Diego, San Jose State and Cal State Fullerton were (and remain) in suitor mode.

Of late, that page has been turned, if not an entirely new book having been written.

Now some highly regarded programs are zeroing in on Young as word of his skills and size has spread. Among the latest batch of schools are Cal, North Carolina State, Gonzaga, Texas Tech, Texas A&M and Cincinnati.

Big are always hard to find and landing one with a combination of ready-to-contribute body and skills set such as Young's are much rarer.

Options are good and Young will have many to choose from, with more certainly on the way.

Plus, as MPC Coach Blake Spiering put it, "Even with all this attention, Andrew's take is 'I need to work harder.'"

6-foot-3 Kareem (Inderkum High) Ransom's 26 points paced Merritt College to a two-point victory over Monterey Peninsula College. Andrew (Monterey High) Young continued his prolific season with 26 points for MPC. Teammate Shayne (St. Francis High) Perryman added four treys.

MPC finishes third in SJCC tourney

Monterey Peninsula College beat host San Jose City College 72-57 today to finish third in this weekend's tournament. Andrew Young recorded yet another double-double (26 points and 15 rebounds) and Shayne Perryman totaled 12, boosted by a trio of treys.

Young excels again

6-foot-9 Andrew Young did just as well in game two of the early Monterey Peninsula College season, totaling 32 points and 17 boards in a 69-57 victory against Merced.
