Butterfield now leading the Aggies

Shorthanded Utah State lost last night to Texas Arlington 74-68 but Spencer Butterfield did his best -- try 23 points and 11 rebounds.

After the game, he went back to the court to practice his shooting.

Missed this from Friday evening: Utah State downed San Jose State University 66-60 with former Yuba College talent Spencer Butterfield totaling 13 points (5-6 shooting) and nabbing five rebounds in 28 minutes as a starter.

After a much-lauded two years at Yuba College, Spencer Butterfield moved on to Utah State, an always top team in the Western Athletic Conference and one that is moving to the Mountain West Conference after this season.

Sl how is he doing so far?

In 13 games (eight as a starter -- he's now firmly ensconced as the starting wing) and 24 minutes an outing, he's averaging 9.4 points plus 4.2 rebounds while shooting 49%, 43% and 79% respectively. He has also compiled 33 assists to 15 turnovers.

Butterfield does it again

Spencer Butterfield just enjoyed another very solid game for Utah State yesterday: 18 points, nine assists and six rebounds in 28 minutes of play as the Aggies downed Texas State 81-57.

Butterfield is en fuego

In a WAC opener, Uath State prevailed 71-67 over host Texas San Antonio with former Yuba College star Spencer Butterfield producing 14 points (6-7 shooting) and seven rebounds. For the season, he's at 15-30 shooting from long distance.

USU Stats posted this today: "Spencer Butterfield – I’ve loved this kid’s game ever since I saw the youtube vids of him playing in JC ball. He’s a perfect fit for the Aggies and Stew’s style of play. Hard nosed, tough player. Plays tough defense, and plays with some serious confidence out there. He hit a HUGE clutch three tonight to seal the victory for us on the road and has had several clutch plays this year. I figured he would start at some point along the way this year, and with Berger going down he has. I’m very glad we have him because I don’t think there is much of a drop off at all between him and Danny. Oh, and he’s shooting around 50% from the three point line so far this year if you need him, good enough for top 5 all-time in a single season."

Utah State 73, UC Davis 61

UC Davis visited Utah State last night and the Beehive State Aggies triumphed 73-61 over their California brethren.

For USU, Spencer (Yuba College) Butterfield started again and scored 14 points (4-6 from long distance) while grabbing seven boards in 28 minutes.

Ryan Sypkens totaled 12 points plus five boards for Davis. Foul trouble limited JT Adenrele to just 18 minutes.

Utah State downed Nicholls State last night 79-72 with former Yuba College standout Spencer Butterfield starting, playing 24 minutes and contributing 14 points plus four rebounds.

Butterfield fills the stat sheet

Spencer (Yuba College) Butterfield started last night for Utah State, providing 10 points, eight rebounds and seven assists in an 86-57 over visiting Western Oregon.

It's very early but USU Stats offered this: "Spencer Butterfield has been deadly from downtown thus far, shooting over 57.1% from downtown. This is good enough to place him #1 all-time in Single Season 3pt FG%. Spencer also has a 2.0 A/TO Ratio placing him tied for 18th place with Justin Jones on the Single Season Assist-To-Turnover Ratio."

Butterfield contributes

In a 77-68 victory over Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Spencer Butterfield totaled five points, a trio of assists plus a rebound and a blocked shot in Utah State's home win.

As Matt Sonnenberg wrote: "Spencer Butterfield has clearly established himself as Stew's ace off the bench early on, with nobody else on the bench really playing significant minutes just yet."

Butterfield comes through

In the first 'real' game for Utah State this season, former Yuba College star Spencer Butterfield contributed nine points (3-3 from three-point range), four rebounds and a pair of assists in 15 minutes of play in a 56-48 Aggie victory over visiting Idaho State.

With the game tied and less than 10 minutes to go, Butterfield stepped up and made the big shots USU needed. For the game he had nine points, four rebounds and two steals. All nine of those points came in the final 10 minutes too. In a game where nobody really loaded up the box score, Butterfield scored points at the right times and was the biggest difference maker to open the season.

Spencer Butterfield seemed to very quietly rack up nine points in only 13 minutes. He looked a little more comfortable tonight, but not a ton, and junior college transfers catching on slowly is nothing at all out of the ordinary. Lots of great players in recent years took a bit to make the transition to USU, Jared Quayle and Brian Green being two very notable ones (you're welcome for the goosebumps those names induce).

For Simon Fraser, Anto Olah (another Yuba College player) produced 13 points and five boards in 24 minutes.

"...Spencer Butterfield - Kind of a quiet game out there with six points in 20 minutes of play, but there were a few times where that relentless motor of his that we've heard about reared his head. More often it seemed like he was trying to minimize risks and play mistake-free, which is ok for someone learning the ropes...But there were also a few times where he seemed to have a mentality of "F-you, I'm making this play and there's nothing you can do about it!"...That mentality is awesome! Butterfield is my bet to make the biggest improvement between the first and second exhibitions..."

The folks at the USU Stats site took in a night of Ratball -- competition between the players on the Utah State roster -- and offered this on a pair of former NorCal talents:

* Spencer Butterfield – Absolutely tore it up out there today. Dropped in 29 points. Hit 5 three pointers. I didn’t keep track of misses, but he didn’t miss many. I’d say he shot over 60% from downtown and I don’t remember him missing many two pointers. He got to the hoop with ease several times. Played with toughness and ran the floor. Played some solid defense. I was most impressed by him today. He also had 5 boards and 3 assists.

* Sean Harris – DNP. He was there in basketball shorts and a nice pink Aggie shirt. He’s a pretty big kid. He took shots at times while the teams were on the other side of the court. After the scrimmages he went out and did a little running and put up some shots. He is very adept at hitting the three point shot (at least in practice). He was hitting them with consistency. Appears to be a good FT shooter as well ... He is cleared to play starting in August.

Spencer Butterfield to Utah State

Talked with Yuba (CA) College guard/wing Spencer Butterfield this morning and he is going to be a Utah State Aggie. Loved everything about his visit -- "I was blown away," he said.

The former Del Oro High star basketball and football player, who was named the Co-Player of the Year in the California Community College ranks this season, had more offers for football coming out of high school but basketball was his love. 

His longtime dream to earn a college basketball scholarship has rightfully come to fruition.
