UC Santa Cruz had three players in double figure scoring with Ben (Aptos High) Dorfman at 13 points, 11 for Kyle (Whitney High) Creighton and Will (Casa Grande High) Crain's 10 plus an enormous 16 rebounds from Tre Weston but the Banana Slugs still fell 58-53 to visiting UC Merced.
The victors were led by freshman guard Cole (Kennedy High) Taira's 15 points who also collected a team-best eight assists.
