A Julian Welch update

Former Yuba College and Franklin High backcourter Julian Welch is playing less this season at Minnesota than last year with 3.7 points and 1.9 rebound averages thus far while shooting 35%, 25% and 64% overall. In 14 games (none as a starter), the senior has 15 steals and a 25-12 assists-to-turnover ratio on a 13-1 team.

In 2011-12, Welch was at just under 25 minutes a contest, averaging 9.5 points plus 2.4 rebounds per outing and shooting 47%, 44% and 77%. In 36 games (21 starts), he nabbed 38 steals and posted 105/82 assist-to-turnover numbers.

Yes, his shooting accuracy has fallen with less playing time (which can be understood but assists-to-turnover ratio is much better. Not sure how to specifically account for that but he is surrounded by better talent this season.

Press for Julian Welch and Jonathan Williams

Brad Winton has an article on the SLAM site about junior college transfers making a mark this season. Two have northern California connections:
Julian Welch | Minnesota | 6-3/G

Welch made an immediate impact for the Gophers this season after transferring in from Yuba CC in California. Welch spent his freshman year at UC Davis and was named Big West Freshman of the Year. At Minnesota he is scoring 10 points per game in 23 minutes per night. He is shooting the ball well from the field as well (2FG%: 51, 3FG%: 42.5, FT%: 88). The Golden Gophers are off to a 12-1 start this season, but the true test will be when they enter Big 10 play. Last season they started off 11-1 and finished the season 17-4.

Jonathon Williams | Wagner | 6-6/SG/SF

Williams spent last season at City College of San Francisco and was named conference MVP, First Team All-State and helped guide CCSF to the California JC State Championship. Williams went nearly 3,000 miles to finish his academic and athletic career at Wagner. I’m sure there are many schools in between San Francisco and Staten Island that would love to have Williams now. Wagner is off to a 7-3 start under Danny Hurley and Williams is their leading scorer (13.9 ppg) and second leading rebounder (4.8 rpg). Williams is putting up these numbers in 24 minutes of action per night.

A report on Julian Welch

Former Yuba College star backcourter Julian Welch impressed in his first game:
...Point guard Julian Welch got his first live action with the Gophers on Monday. Welch missed last week's exhibition game due to an ankle injury, but played 18 minutes against Augustana.

Welch, a junior transfer from Yuba (Calif.) Community College, had seven points and four rebounds in his Gophers debut. He committed a turnover in his first possession, but didn't turn it over again the rest of the game.

"I thought Julian did some good things," Smith said. "I thought he settled down, played very solid. He gave us that aggressiveness that we were lacking. … Julian is a guy that we need to step up. He's learning our system, learning our offense, learning our defense ..."

Some press for Julian Welch

Former Yuba College and Franklin High star backcourter Julian Welch is in the running for playing time at the point up in Minnesota:
"On Media Day, [Coach Tubby] Smith touted junior college transfer Julian Welch’s toughness and basketball understanding. “He’s got a lot of games under his belt, having played at UC-Davis and then having played at junior college. …He’s a scoring guard that can be a point guard for us,” he said. But while Welch was Big West freshman of the year at UC-Davis and averaged 19 points and five assists last year at Yuba Community College (Calif.), whether and how that will translate to Big Ten production is yet to be determined"
