No drilling down on the depth of someone's passion for a certain activity is necessary when this level of confession is offered. It's simple yet direct and rock solid: "I love the feeling it gives me, the rush. I'm free, I can be me." That's 6-foot-3 2017 prospect Isiah Davis succinctly explaining his connection with basketball."
Davis is averaging 20.1 points per game alongside 5.4 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 3.6 steals an outing for 14-2 Burbank High. That's called making the jump from solid contributor to team and Metropolitan Conference star as he averaged 12.1 points an outing last season.
Also asked what he does best on the court, Davis answered, "Taking the defense off the dribble and making the right play. Either hitting the open shot or finding one of my teammates."
Talking about Davis, Sacramento hoops maven Don Manning-Fuimaono said, "Isiah has the instincts and intangibles to be an impact player at the next level. He has elite quickness and athleticism and he makes dynamic plays that you can't teach. He just plays so hard! He's special!"
Back in October 2016 after a basketball event, Jerina Madayag wrote "2017 Isiah Davis 6’3 – G from Sacramento’s Burbank High, Isaiah is under the radar. He is a tough competitor and just knows how to get to the basket to score. He drives in and is strong and athletic. He plays in your face defense and works hard on his game, even though he has natural athleticism. A great pick up at the next level, as this guy can go."
According to Davis, "I consider myself a leader but you can't just tell people what to do, you have to show them and be an extension of the coach" He recalled the first time command and control became concrete for him. "In an AAU game in Reno, we were down by 12 and the team was looking at me as if saying 'we're ready to go when you go' and we came back and won. After that, I knew I had leadership ability."
Influenced because "everybody in my family plays basketball," Davis grew up watching his brother on the court. "Even then, I was looking at everything on the floor." He and his brother, Antoine, still match up. "We play all the time. I'm real competitive and he challenges me. I appreciate that." Allan Iverson serves as an inspiration -- "the little guy on the court challenging everybody."
Davis possesses a 3.8 grade point average -- "my Mom makes sure I know how important school is" -- and he's not sure what will be his major in college. "Probably something in the medical field."
His sense is that he's being looked at as a combo guard but will primarily be positioned at the one spot.
Davis is liking what he sees so far of his Titan squad. "We're playing wonderful basketball and playing well as a team."
