Modesto Junior College opened the season with a near upset against the state's #3 ranked team before coming up short against the home team Las Positas Hawks, 75-72. The Pirates led most of the game with the Hawks' first lead 65-64 with 5:44 left in the game. The Pirates had three players foul out in the last six minutes of the game and LPC made eight free throws during that time. MJC led at halftime 40-31, making eight first half three pointers. Freshman Jemeil King led the Pirates with 18 points, all in the second half. Josh Allen added 15 points and 10 rebounds. "In our first game together we went right after the #3 team in the state on their court. We are hungry for wins and excited about this season," said MJC Coach Mike Girardi.
