Thoughts after the St. Mary's triumph

* Just what is Randy Bennett's secret (or secrets)? His guys always seem to be having fun while furiously competing. Now some may say it's easy to have fun and play pedal-to-the-metal if you are winning but the first has to happen for the second to appear. What he and his staff and his players have achieved in a glorified high school gymnasium (not knocking it -- just observing) is remarkable.

* What is also amazing is that Matthew Dellavedova has assumed Mickey McConnell's role of last year but nobody has (yet) filled Dellavedova's role of 2010-11 -- yet the Gaels are winning. Stephen Holt certainly has his moments but isn't at a consistent enough level to date.

* Do remember that it's all happening this season in Moraga minus backcourter Paul McCoy who likely would be starting with Dellavedova. McCoy is out for the season with an injury but is going to be a fabulous fit in the St. Mary's style.

* Thought Mitchell Young wasn't lefty (are we wrong?) but he keeps sinking shots leaving his left hand.

* Loved the "There's Waldow" signage in the stands -- our humor bar may be set low but still.

* Also loved the Omar appearance -- still the 'face' of the program

* This may qualify as sacrilegious in a St. Mary's post but Gonzaga's Kevin Pangos has as quick a release on his shot as we've seen. Dellavedova's is quick too but it appears he starts it from lower down.
