Looking at Las Positas College

Las Positas College possesses an intriguing blend of size, skill and athleticism this season and owns a 13-2 overall record.

The tall are 7-foot sophomore Donald (Center High/Cosumnes River College) Mims, 6-foot-10 Anand (Manteca High) Hundal and 6-foot-8 second-year talent Stokely (Amador Valley High/USF) Chaffee. Mims is offering 7.3 rebounds and 4.2 blocked shots an outing, the freshman Hundal is still getting his college basketball feet under him while Chaffee is big time with 13.7 points plus 10.1 rebounds nightly.

6-foot-3 sophomore guard Keith (Oakland High) Hunter leads the Hawks in scoring at 13.7 points, followed by Chaffee. Caleb (Washington High) Baskett, a second-year 6-foot-2 backcourter, is averaging 12.1 points and fellow 6-foot-2 soph Kameron (Granda High) Johnson stands at 10.9.

The three most startling comparative statistics for LPC are:

* shooting 50.1% while holding opponents to 38.4%

* averaging 24.7 free throw attempts to 15.9

* out-rebounding the opposition 47.6 to 25.7

The one Achilles heel if it can be called that is 15.2 turnovers committed to 8.1.

This is a well-balanced squad.

Looking at Yuba College

Yuba College is a season-opening road loss to CCSF (by seven points) and a four-point dip versus North Idaho away from being undefeated. This, in a season where most didn't know what to expect from a 49er squad which has played but one home game.

This northern crew is led by a Big Three which itself is paced by 6-foot-8 Jihad (Vanden High) Woods, a sophomore who is averaging a double-double comprised of 18.3 points and 11.2 rebounds per contest. He is shooting 63.2% overall.

Next is 12.7 points from 6-foot-2 freshman Jaaron (Cosumnes Oaks High) Stallworth and 11.2 provided by 6-foot-10 sophomore Erick (Marysville High) Scheive who is accurate on 60% of his shots to date.

Intermittent scoring eruptions have come from a trio of sophomores: 6-foot-7 Jalen (River City High) Davis at 8.5 points, 7.7 via 5-foot-10 Jourdan (Central Catholic High) Johnson plus 7.3 points from 6-foot-6 Xavier (River City High)Francois.

Also, opponents are shooting less than 30 % on threes against the 49ers.

It's a mix that is obviously working well.

"A Goodbye to My Mother"

Rolaun Dunham, a Riverbank High alum, has posted a notice at the GoFundMe site about his mother's unexpected passing:

"I know most of you are enjoying a happy holiday, but my family and I are going through a tough time. A woman at the age of 54 named Toscal LaGloria Phillips, has passed unexpectedly this Christmas Eve. That woman was our mother, and we will never be the same. We do not yet know the underlying cause for she went into cardiac arrest multiple times at Oak Valley Hospital this morning.

She was a kindhearted friend, a loving mother, and she had an amazing heart and spirit. She would help anybody she could even when she couldn't do for herself. If you could be so kind to give what you can to help us lay her to rest, we would forever be grateful. We are truly pained and at a lost for words. Please help us.

Help spread the word!"

Ivan Rabb versus Virginia analysis

"Breaking Down Ivan Rabb Vs. Virginia’s Defense" -- Adam Butler

An excerpt: "...The ultimate point I’m beleaguering here is that California center Ivan Rabb didn’t touch the ball for the final four minutes in last week’s 56-52 loss to Virginia. Rabb, the second-highest vote-getter in Preseason All-America voting, took only four shots on the evening and did not touch the ball for the final four minutes of a crucial non-conference home game. OK, to be fair, he did get a touch with 18 seconds remaining. It was with his back turned 24 feet away from the basket and resulted in an immediate handoff to teammate Jabari Bird (and zero threat to score). Ignoring that touch fits this final four-minute narrative but also demonstrates two key points: 1) Bennett is indeed the best defensive coach in America; 2) Cal is ineffectively using its greatest asset..."

Do note in the comment section about Rabb's health this season. However, the critique is about his usage.

Looking at San Francisco City College

City College of San Francisco stands 14-1 at Christmas break and riding a seven-game winning streak with just two Rams are scoring in double figures -- Zach (Berkeley High) Copeland at a very healthy 18.5 points per game and Portland State bounceback Armani (Stuart Hall High) Collins providing 10.5 points.

However, a number of teammates are chipping in as Eddie (Archbishop Riordan) Stansberry is scoring 8.3 points, Adrian (Berkeley High/Reno International Prep) Rico 8.0, Eddy (Miramonte High) Ionescu 7.2, Michael (James Logan High) Steadman 7.1, Michael (McClymonds High) Wright 6.9 and Kendall (Freedom High) McIntosh tallying 5.9.

Copeland is the count-on guy with usually a rotating pair or a trio of other Rams enjoying good-scoring games on a given night. There's no Jalen Canty in the middle this season to force double-teams but that hasn't impaired the offensive firepower. CCSF is shooting 48.6% overall and 39.4% from long distance with 3/4 of the roster featuring newcomers or freshman. That's remarkable.

6.5 blocked shots a contest indicates the Ram bigs are an established defensive presence.

Looking at Feather River College

Minus the exhilarating Derrick Randolph (28.8 points per game last season) who is currently sidelined due to knee surgery, Feather River has kept rolling and currently owns a 13-3 overall record bolstered by four players averaging in double figures scoring. Keep that in mind alongside the fact that the Golden Eagles have played just a single home game.

In scoring, Anthony Smith is 21.3 points per contest, Chris McDonald 14.2, Jamel White 13.3 with Lamous Brown at 12.2.

Smith is a 6-foot-6 sophomore jumping jack who is also providing 8.2 rebounds.

Out of Texas, McDonald is a 6-foot-3 sophomore averaging 3.9 rebounds.

As a 6-foot freshman, White is bringing 6.0 assists and 2.9 rebounds a night

Brown is a 7-foot freshman out of Chicago who is also gathering in 4.4 rebounds a contest as well as rejecting 2.3 shot attempts each time out.

The FRC height of this quartet runs across the spectrum with a definite big and a definite point plus a forward who plays bigger than his height and a nice-sized guard.

Looking at CaƱada College

CaƱada College sits at 12-4 at the beginning of conference play and with a five-game winning streak. Five Colts (hey, the Bay Area Fab Five?) are averaging in double-figures scoring with their numbers tightly bunched.

The rollout: Antony (San Lorenzo High) Navarette leads at 14.0 points a night followed by William Green at 13.5. Mick (Newark Memorial High/West Georgia) Pinkney is scoring at an 11.6 clip with Davis (Hayward High) Kimble at 10.6 and 10.4 from Keith (Gateway High) Dickerson.

A trio of Colts are averaging more than three assists a contest: Kimble 3.4 with Pickney and Green registering at 3.1.

Despite not having much in the way of size (6-foot-5 as the tallest), CaƱada is out-rebounding opponents thus far at 40.9 to 29.3 while garnering a very healthy 12.4 boards a game.

This is both a newcomer dominated squad and one loaded with freshman.12-4 (two of those losses to Yuba) is quite the achievement when the blending of new talents is still a work-in-progress.

On Christmas Day: Utah 74, S.F. Austin 66

On December 25, JoJo (Newark Memorial High/Yuba College) Zamora got going for Utah and scored 16 powered buttressed by 4-5 three-point shooting as the Utes downed Stephen F. Austin 74-66 over in the islands.

A Trey Pugh update

"After averaging 24 points a game and receiving MVP of the Solano County Athletic Conference as a junior, Benicia High School guard Trey Pugh knew that he had to work even harder over the summer if he wanted to have an even better senior year. After trying out with a number of different AAU teams, Pugh decided to join Coach Brandon Bracy with Team Rampage (Vallejo, CA). The team would include other Solano County Conference members such as Gamon Howard, Malcolm Bracy, Dakarria Peterson, and more.

While going through the summer with Team Rampage, Trey was forced to focus more on becoming a play-maker, run point guard at times, and focus more on the defensive end. "Trey was already talented before coming to us but it was the fact that he focused more on defense and getting others involved that took his game to the next level," Coach Bracy said. "As much as he has improved, I still think there is a lot more room for his game to fully develop before he plays at the collegiate level, but his potential is very high" Coach Bracy added.

Trey Pugh has helped lead Benicia High School to a 5-0 start to the season, and is averaging 24 points a game. Benicia is looking to improve from their first round playoff exit against Inderkum (Sacramento, CA) last season."

Meet Alex Braken-Guelke

If you're 6-foot-3, possess plus athleticism and can shoot from distance as well as dribble-drive to the hoop, a decisive number imperative components are in place for both current and future basketball success. That's why it's important to catch 2018 Los Gatos High guard Alex Braken-Guelke in action this season because it's one in which he is breaking out and establishing himself as a solid college prospect.

Wildcat Coach Nick Ward is seeing the step forward. "A year ago, Alex was a slasher. This year, he has become a really good shooter. Playing with next level guys (Braken-Guelke's affiliation with the Top Flight Elite travel team) and seeing their work ethic has helped.

Ward continued, "Alex is explosive, quick and jumps out of the gym. He's the point man on our press and, when he puts his mind to it, is a good on-ball defender. Everyone sees it when he's 'on' and feeds off that and he makes his teammates better."

But the Braken-Guelke achievement Ward is most proud of is "Alex becoming a 4.0 student." He is also ahead of the classes required for NCAA eligibility.

Asked to name his top talents, Braken-Guelke offered "my speed, I'm one of the faster players and I love to drive."

There is also an unusual level of maturity and reasoning in play here. In an age where playing time and numbers are the twin significant others for basketball participants (and their parents), Braken/Guelke made a curious decision. He joined up with Top Flight Elite. His analysis? "Top Flight Elite is the best team in my area even if I don't get as much playing time as I want." That's because ahead of him in the rotation is Siena commit Jake Wojcik as well as Tyler Johnson and Angelo Athens. Practicing against those talents set up a 'get better or get buried' self ultimatum. There was also another factor involved in his decision -- "the coaching at Top Flight Elite."

Jamon Osby coaches that travel team. He offered this on Braken-Guelke: "Alex is arguably one of the best athletes on our team. He can compete for anything bcause of his athletic ability. He has always played up with more advanced other guys and he had a great July, especially in Vegas. Now he's a scorer and leader on his high school team." Braken-Guelke is averaging 18.6 points and 3.9 rebounds per game.

Osby, also an assistant varsity coach at Bellarmine College Prep, also highlighted aspects of Braken-Guelke's game that feed off each other -- outside shooting ability and going hard to the hoop. "You have to close out hard on Alex because of his shooting ability and that opens up him attacking the basketball and using his athletic ability to either finish above the rim or get fouled. If your athletic and can't shoot, defenses can sag off and, because Alex can do both, he is extremely hard to defend."

Another telling anecdote for Braken-Guelke is how he became a more well-rounded player. "My left hand has gotten a lot better since my freshman year because my JV coach suggested I begin to eat and brush my teeth lefthanded." Obviously that, in addition to performing lefty-centric basketball drills.

Coming from a soccer-playing family, he crossed over. "In the seventh grade, I changed and played basketball full-time. I liked it more because it's just super fast-paced and takes a lot of skills."

Braken-Guelke noted two highlights thus far in his basketball experience. One was my first in-game dunk two years ago during the summer and other was our loss (72-62) last year in the CCS semifinals to St. Ignatius. We found that we could run with that team."
