Osayande is the Positive Example

During this time within the basketball world where player movement in high school and college captures so much attention, Benson Osayande is the ultimate anachronism. His hoops résumé is one of commitment and loyalty: one high school (Franklin High), a single travel team (Team Sage), a solitary community college program (Casper College) and a sole four-year school (Montana State).
How so? Attribute this to a combination of his personal character plus the decision-making process utilized by the 6-foot-9 talent.
It all began with Team Sage out of Sacramento, a travel squad albeit with an emphasis on academics. “Coach Wornel Simpson saw me playing in a middle school tournament. We talked afterwards and just clicked. My parents loved the organization and Coach Simpson. He took care of me for four or five years.”
Here’s Benson Osayande Sr. on the Team Sage experience: “I liked the goal setting by Coach Wornel that all his scholar-athletes were expected to maintain at least a 3.30 grade average throughout the academic school year. Benson maintained 3.50 and above throughout. In addition to academics, Team Sage enhances its players’ social accountability. Team Sage provided educationa
l tools and training to its student-athletes such as tutoring, peer and professional mentoring, educational workshops and more.
This was also the time Osayande was attending Franklin High in Elk Grove and playing for Coach Jesse Formaker.
Osayande chose to attend Casper College in Wyoming, a program headed by Coach Dan Russell. “A lot of California JCs were after me but one of the coaches at Nevada knew of the program at Casper and recommended it. I took an official visit in March with my parents and made my decision to go there about a month later.”
Why the Thunderbirds? “I liked the coaches and the environment, my overall role and fit thet they had the major was looking for.”
“My wife and I went to Casper College with Benson during his official visit just to know the town, see the school, discuss with the academic advisor and meet the coaches,” Osayande Sr. recalled. “Ultimately, the decision as to where he went was his since he was the one who would have to live there for the next two years.”
Experiencing daily life similar to that of a four-year school, Osayande resided in a dorm and and was provided with three meals a day in a campus cafeteria.
One interesting element to the Casper program involved community support. “You live in the dorms but each player has a host family. You could go visit them and hang out, watch TV, play with the kids and they would also provide some meals.”
About the notorious weather (at least in winter time), he offered, “it was windy and snowed a lot but you get used to it.”
After two years at Casper College, Osayande entered the recruiting process once again. He liked the coaching staff at Montana State and eventually went with the Bobcats, a move of about 415 miles north and west to Bozeman. “They told me they would work on developing me and Coach [Chris] Haslem is 6-foot-11 with a lot of experience (13 years) playing overseas.”
This was a decision Osayande made on his own as his parents felt he was experienced enough to do so.
Again, Osayande Sr: “We had no concern about Benson being in Casper, Wyoming or Bozeman, Montana. While still in Casper College and before he told us, Benson signed with Montana State. I told Benson he is an adult so he should be making decisions for himself.”
In 31 games this season, Osayande averaged 12.9 minutes, 4.4 points, 2.7 rebounds and shot 54% overall, 71% on free throws. His boardplay broke down with 35 at the offensive end and 48 defensively. About that, he explained, “I just have a knack for the ball on the offensive end. If it’s a three-point shot, I expect a long rebound and position myself outside the key. If a shot is taken from the left side, I position myself on the right side.

What’s next for him in Bozeman? “I’m working on my game, putting on some pounds and continuing to get better.”
Osayande was one of two Montana State men’s basketball players named to Big Sky winter academic all-conference list. He is a community health major and wants to work in the health field although he isn’t sure in what endeavor as yet but he first wants to play overseas.
His recruiting advice to high school upperclassmen? “Don’t rush your decision. By your senior year, know who really is recruiting you and who wants you the most. Don’t choose the biggest name just because it’s the biggest. You want the best for you.”
Here’s Coach Haslam on the returning senior big: “Benson has been such a great addition to our program here at Montana State both on and off the court. We are excited about his improvement this year and are expecting him to have a great senior year.”

Butterfield is Mr. Trey

"Spencer Butterfield was unstoppable on the perimeter
Perhaps reflecting the overall evolution of the game into a more perimeter-oriented one, the record for most three-pointers made in a single game changed hands the most times this season, settling down with Spencer Butterfield of Nanterre.

The 24-year-old marksman made 11-of-13 three-point attempts against Muratbey Usak Sportif in the Quarter-Finals en route to equaling the FIBA Europe Cup scoring record of 39 points, breaking the 10 three-pointer mark set by John Roberson of Elan Chalon just a week earlier."

Dark until Monday

The lights are out until late Sunday/early Monday.

Jolting news

Evan Daniels: "Sophomore guard Paris Austin just received a release from Boise State, per a source. Averaged 12.3 PPG."

After a sophomore season in which he averaged in double figures and shot much better from the floor (except 7-33 from long distance), this change of address and its timing are a mystery.

The 6-foot Austin likely would have been a full-time starter at the point with Boise being a title contender in the Mountain West Conference so nothing seems amiss there.

So why leave?

Based purely on gut feeling and no inside scoop whatsoever, California is certainly in need of someone with his experience, even though Austin will have to redshirt the upcoming season. If proven true, that still leaves the now part of the decision unexplained.

Logan Johnson offered by the Spartans

Logan Johnson: "Blessed to have received an offer from San Jose State"

William Jessup adds a big

"Welcome PJ Posey to the Jessup Warrior Basketball family!"

He's 6-foot-8, 260 and has previously played for Cal State Bakersfield.

The Gators land a point

Full-Time Hoops: "2017 Orange Glen G Michael Diaz signs with San Francisco State."

Full-Time Hoops: "San Francisco State is getting perhaps one of the top 5 on-ball defenders in SoCal in Michael Diaz. Explosive athlete and playmaker."

Diaz is a 6-foot-1 prep point out of Escondido.

John Bynum Jr: "K.J.Duronslet (Sacramento) has committed to Union College (KY). Duronslet averaged 16.7 points and 9.1 rebounds for the Panthers last year"

Duronslet is a 6-foot-3 guard out of Kennedy High. He averaged 20.7 points and 11.2 boards in conference play.

Union is coming off a 35-3 record as well as the 2017 NAIA Division II National Championship.

Good news for Bealer

Kyle Goon: "Utah basketball heard back on Gabe Bealer's request for an additional year last week: He's good to play next season."

Faruq-Bey came on with a vengeance

The offensive efficiency of Western Oregon's Ali (San Lorenzo High) Faruq-Bey dramatically improved once conference play began in the 2017-18 season.

Take a look:

His scoring went from 15.0 to 16.0 but it's his gain in shooting accuracy was remarkable: 44%, 31% and 72% early in the season to 48%, 39% and 77% in league despite the latter being a time when you play opponents twice and defenses are much more cognizant of sets, tendencies and such.

Noah Blackwell & Fresno State

The talk was that Noah Blackwell primarily departed from Long Beach State because he wanted to be positioned more at the point. So does the Bulldog roster make this a strong possibility now that he has selected Fresno State?

Deshon Taylor averaged 2.1 assists this season and will have one season of eligibility remaining when Blackwell can take to the court again. But nobody else on the current roster looks to have point guards skills which would earn them major minutes.

As to recruiting, two offers have been extended to high school points in the 2019 class and one, Logan Johnson, in the 2018 grouping. A 2017 point has also been offered but as yet remains undecided.

So the one element nobody knows about as yet is who Bulldog Coach Rodney Terry will bring in with his next recruiting class and if any will be points during Blackwell's redshirt season.

By the way, the 6-foot-2 Blackwell enjoyed a 53/33 assist-to-turnover ration this season while averaging 8.1 points and 2.5 rebounds a contest. He shot 42% overall, 38% on threes and shot 6-7 from the foul line. All this in 24.4 minutes per game.

Mize to the Seawolves

coachmacj: "Congratulations to Davion Mize on his signing with Sonoma State Men's Basketball...another Contra Costa Comet gets it done!"

He played high school ball at Salesian Prep.

The 'Fro gets a Malibu offer

Sasha Harris-Forbes: "S/O to @mason_forbes25 for his Official Offer from Pepperdine!"

Akinjo with offer from back East

Josh Gershon: "2018 Oakland Soldiers PG James Akinjo picked up an offer from #UConn."

A bit on D.J. Wilson and the NBA draft

Q. I just wanted to get your sense of the Michigan trio, Derrick Walton, Senior, along with Mo Wagner and D.J. Wilson. What can they do at the combine, and again, the two underclassmen not signing with agents, maybe the look for them to come back for their senior seasons?

Jeff Goodman: Yeah, the NBA guys I talked to said, Mo Wagner, come back. Great that he played well at the end of the year, but it was a small sample size, and they said, he’s got good upside, come back, become a better rebounder, become a better defender, but go back to school. D.J., same thing for the most part, but they felt like he did more to justify what he did and testing the process. They felt like he could be a 25 to 40 type guy at the end of the day, but again, almost everyone I talked to said both should come back, Wagner 1,000 percent, and Wilson, if he comes back, they felt like he could really play his way into the first round for sure next year.

Fran Fraschilla: Yeah, I would agree with Jeff on both counts. Neither one of those guys is physically ready for the NBA. And to Jeff’s point, if you take away the 26 points versus Louisville and the good game against Minnesota late in the year, he did not play great the rest of the postseason. D.J. is really interesting because he is the quintessential 3 and D big guy right now. He shoots threes, and he’s got great length to defend. But even he got bullied inside. So both of those guys are not physically ready in my opinion to be in the NBA right now.

D.J. could get drafted in the first round late, but he ain’t playing in an important NBA game for at least a couple years...

Excellent

Report on 2017 Southern California Hoop Review

Here are just some of the Nor Cal talents profiled in Gerry Freitas' 2017 Southern California Hoop Review report.

Plenty of other Nor Cal players are also detailed -- these are some of the ones whose names appear in print less often -- hit the link above for all the names.

* 6'0" CG Jordan Adams of Vacaville HS 2018 (Bay Area Renegades)

Adams utilizes his quickness and speed to get by would-be defenders. He plays too fast at times, but his speed is an asset more often than not while attacking the rim or slashing to the basket for the score.

* 6’9” C Emmanuel Ajanaku-Makun of Woodside Priory HS 2018 (Oakland Soldiers 17 Blue Elite)

Intriguing big man prospect who can finish with touch around the basket and also face up with touch on his set shot out to 3-point range and was especially consistent from the top of the key. Good motor and defensive instincts when contesting, altering and blocking shots.

* 5’7” PG Eric Alston of Sacramento HS 2019 (California United 16)

Nice combination of strength and speed which allows him to get into the paint and create offensive opportunities. Does a good job of getting defenders on his hip both in transition and half-court settings which allows him to probe and put pressure on the defense.

* 5’9” CG Noah Barry of Turlock MS 2021 (Stanco 15U)

Quick, scorer and playmaker and has decent ball handling skills and good vision to create for others. Really good on ball defender

* 6’5” C Mason Beske of Monte Vista Christian HS 2020 (Seasides Finest)

Good rebounder, really athletic blocks lots of shots and moves feet well. Need more polish on back to the basket game. Good feel for age.

* 5’11” PG Xavion Brown of Sheldon HS 2020 (Lakeshow 16’s Black)

Plays well in open court and can shoot it with range. Can shoot deep beyond the arc with pressure.

* 6’4” SG Avery Burt of Berkeley HS 2018 (Lakeshow Seniors)

Attacks the basket off the bounce at-will and uses size and athleticism to finish through contact at the rim. Plays with a lot of toughness and energy at both ends of the floor. Can rebound both in and out of space at both ends. Versatile defender who can guard multiple positions.

* 6’4” PF Evans Charles of Monterey HS 2019 (Seaside’s Finest 17s)

Active and high motor interior presence who cleans up the offensive and defensive glass. Strong finisher in the painted area with either hand. Changes ends of the floor quickly and rim-runs with purpose

* 6'2" CG Jelani Clark of Archbishop Riordan HS 2020 (Splash City Elite 2020)

Extreme length, high motor, and superior athleticism describe this young thoroughbred. His jump shot is developing as is his mid-range scoring skills, but he's lethal in transition and in the paint due to his length, tenacity, and bounce.

* 5'11" CG Marcus Greene of Archbishop Mitty  HS 2020 (Lakeshow 15s Elite)

Greene appears to be well-coached due to his ability to affect the game at both ends. This talented combo-guard has ideal length and solid quickness. Defensively he closes out defenders and has active hands. Offensively, his head is up and he delivers the ball quickly in transition.

* 6'2" CG Miles Greene of Monte Vista HS 2018 (Lakeshow 17s Black)

Greene is a gamer. The thick-bodied combo-guard competes at both ends and isn't afraid to take the big shot. He gets in the lane due to his strength and determined mindset. He can score at all three levels, but is willing to set up his teammates as well.

* 6’4” SF Telano Hardee of Vanden HS 2020 (NBBA 15U Turner)
Strong and finishes through contact, above average handle, defensively can guard multiply positions.  Can score inside and out.

* 6'7" C Dishon Jackson of St. Patrick St. Vincent HS 2020 (California United 15U)

Although not as tall, Jackson has some physical attributes that remind me of UCLA big man Ike Anigbogu. He has long arms, solid timing, and he's assertive in the paint area. He can finish above the rim and he shows a soft touch as well. He rebounds well in his area and shows solid timing on the defensive end.

* 5’9” PG Walter Lum of Lick-Wilmerding HS 2018 (Bay Area Warriors 17s)

Smart and crafty point guard with a good feel for the game. Understands how to operate in high ball-screen action. Practices patience when coming off screens, probes the paint and surveys the best course of action. Has good vision both in half-court and transition settings which he uses to set up teammates.

* 5'11" PG Bryce Monroe of Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep 2020 (Splash City Elite 2020)

Monroe is a scoring point guard who can get in the lane and he has the quickness and bounce (can adjust in the air) to finish amongst the bigs. He possesses a ton of moxie at both ends of the floor and isn't afraid to mix it up in the paint finishing and rebounding. He needs to continue to hone his point guard skills (high screen and roll/mid-range finishes/etc.), but overall his future looks promising.

* 6'6" SF John Nagle of Will C. Wood 2018 (Bay Area Renegades)

One of the bigger surprises of the event. High IQ/court vision. This long and rangy wing-type needs to get stronger (narrow shoulders), but he has a nice offensive package. He has a smooth shooting stroke out to 22-feet and his release is tight. He excels at facilitating in the half court set and is an excellent passer. High academic. Division 1 potential.

* 6’5” G Spencer Spivy of San Francisco University HS 2018 (Bay Area Warriors 17s)

Consistent scoring threat from multiple spots behind the arc. Has a good feel for the game and solid ball handling skills, which allow him to create off the dribble to set teammates up for scoring opportunities. Impressive transition finisher who looks to attack at all times.

* 6'6" PF Kendall Stubblefield of Bellarmine Prep 2018 (Tyler Johnson Elite)

Stubblefield is inside-out forward with a versatile skill set. He uses his body well in the paint and showcases excellent footwork. He has the frame and built to finish through contact in the paint, but also has the face-up skills and deceptive quickness to get by bigger defenders. Definite Division 1 sleeper.

* 6'7" PF Demetrius Williams of Amador Valley HS 2018 (Tyler Johnson Elite)

Williams is a potential diamond in the rough. Long arms and huge feet describe his physical attributes and he's bouncy as well. A no nonsense player that rebounds in traffic, but also has the finesse to knock in deep jump shots. His shot looks smooth overall and he has range out to 22-feet. Overall, he still quite raw, but the talent is there.

* 6’1 PG Anthony Yu of St. Joseph Norte Dame HS  2020 (Bay Area Mambas 15u Elite)

Anthony is a quick point guard with a nice stroke and very good from to be a young player. His activity off ball helps him get open. He creates very well off the bounce in two to three dribbles.
