A Gael blast from the past

John Devine writes:

E.J. Rowland has been named to St. Mary's all-time men's top 25 basketball team over the last 100 years.

Rowland, who spent two seasons as the Gaels' point guard, helped the team set a school scoring record with 2,377 points his junior year. In his senior year in 2005, he ignited the team to a school-record 25 wins and a trip to the NCAA tournament — the fourth in team history.

The 6-foot-3 playmaker, who prepped at Palma and spent one season at Hartnell College, led the Gaels in steals in both years, and is still No. 8 all time with 101. His single-season total of 54 ranks No. 4 all time.

Rowland, who is playing professionally in Germany, averaged 12.1 points and 4.1 assists in two seasons at St. Mary's. He was named to the West Coast Conference All-Tournament team in 2004, leading the team in scoring.
