The Hoopniks folks with a Saturday recap of two of the bigs matching up at the LeBron James Skills Academy:
Two of the three top prospects at camp, pivots Cheick Diallo of Our Savior New American (NY) and Ivan Rabb of Bishop O’Dowd (CA), found themselves matched-up in the semifinals of the tournament portion of the event, which was a highly anticipated showdown. Their squads also played on Thursday, but the two top-5 national prospects didn’t cover each other hardly at all during that game.
The Saturday afternoon face off between Diallo and Rabb saw the players guard each other for extended periods of time, and was an important exercise in comparing and contrasting the relative abilities of two of the nation’s most sought after prospects.
This round goes to Diallo, as he demonstrated the nation’s top motor, and cleared more caroms than anyone else in the game. Additionally, he rejected several shots – in what was actually a fairly well played and contested game. One of Diallo’s most persistent suitors, Kentucky, had their head coach watching the game, and Calipari had to come away impressed with the way Diallo consistently beat the fast break, and finished with authority constantly.
As for Rabb, he has more refined post moves and an inch on Diallo. Rabb showcased his agility and ballhandling a few times, but was relatively stifled by Diallo’s defense, as many are. While Rabb’s overall skill level may be higher than Diallo’s, the constant motor of Diallo won the day.
