The Super 100, a basketball camp last month at El Cerrito High School, brought together dozens of budding local prep stars. As the event began, a row of sneaker-clad counselors addressed the players, who were seated in rows on the gym floor.

One man looked out of place. Dressed in a white T-shirt, baggy jeans and black Chuck Taylors, he held a small video camera. His face was framed by a crew cut, a patch of chin hair and large studs in each ear.
“Travis Farris,” he said, introducing himself to the players. “ ‘Yay Area’s Finest’ is here today, so if you do something good ... ”
The players nodded in recognition. They knew Mr. Farris well. A 25-year-old Bed Bath & Beyond employee, he doubles as the unofficial kingmaker of Bay Area hoops...
