Salesian High Coach Bill Mellis has a DVD out -- "Plays & Drills" -- showcasing some of his best practices. No, it's not the highlights from working with his Pride team on non-game days but a sharing of choice examples of the best drills and situational offenses in his repertoire.
As for Mellis' bonafides, Salesian beat Price-Los Angeles 70-56 in the 2011-12 Division IV State Championship game back in January.
The year before, Salesian fell 63-57 to Windward in the state championship game.
In the 2008-2009 season, the Pride earned a 65-64 win over Bishop Montgomery to grab its initial state championship.
Combine that at-the-helm success with Mellis' tutelage as a player under Pete Newell Jr., a student assistant for Cal's Lou Campanelli and an assistant coach at Salesian with Bill Treseler and it's clear he has ideas to offer.
In the DVD, Mellis provides drills to produce focus and concentration in practice, plays to use against a man-to-man defense, ideas for attacking a zone defense plus in-bounds and jump ball plays.
Hey, there's no guarantee your team will win a state championship after you glean ideas from this video but you'll increase the odds.
