The Bay Area Regional Basketball Camp leading to the Norcal Showcase

The Bay Area Regional Basketball Camp, one of a number of official qualifying camps for the upcoming NorCal Showcase took place last weekend at Heritage High, a project of the San Francisco Rebels and Team Select.

It was a precursor to the October 20 Norcal Showcase.

Below are a number talent evaluations (some in multiples due to the number of evaluators) resulting from participation this past weekend, to be followed by information about the Norcal Showcase :

* 6-foot-6 ELLIOTT SMITH 2014 Freedom High/Team Superstar - Very long athletic small forward player  who is very versatile. Elliott is capable of shooting the three-point shot,  the mid-range and handling the ball in transition. He also displayed the ability to pass the ball in transition and off the dribble. Elliott  also defends on ball well and plays the passing lanes well off the ball.  He rebounds well for his sizen as well. Elliott needs to improve his body with proper weight training, also he could look to become more  aggressive as he matures and gets stronger. Elliott is low to mid major division one player.

* ELLIOTT SMITH - Elliott is 6-foot-6 and built like a spider. He has long limbs which make him very difficult to keep away from the basket at both ends of the court (countless offensive rebounds and put backs). Also, he has a long stride which allows him to get up and down the court with ease. A great finisher, his jumper is really coming along. Can’t wait  to follow this kid in season.

+++++

* 6-foot-6 SHON BRIGGS 2014 Heritage High/Oakland Soldiers - A very strong, tough, physical small forward who has the ability to  guard power forwards. Shon shoots the three-point shot, the mid-range and drives  to the basket well in transition. He is very physical when attacking the basketball, he also displays solid passing ability in transition and in the half court set with the dribble and without the dribble. Shon is capable physically of being a lock down defender. With improved agility and conditioning, Shon will see his stock rise to a higher level. He is a low to high major division 1 player.

* SHON BRIGGS is a physical specimen with the ability to dominate on the  basketball court. At 6-foot-5 plus in a big frame, Shon exhibits great quickness for his size and has great leaping ability. His size and  leaping ability along with his competitive tenacity make him very difficult to defend inside. He can post-up and score with his back to the basketball and is a dominant rebounder. Shon is a dominant player inside but his ability to perform outside the paint should not be  overlooked. He has the quickness and balls skills to blow past his  defender and finish. What makes Shon especially difficult to defend  from the perimeter is his ability to shoot the basketball. If you play him too tight he has a quick first step and the ability drive past  defenders. If you back off, Shon has a nice shooting touch with a lot  of range that allows him to score from mid-range distances and beyond  the three-point arc. Shon's overall athleticism also makes him a very effective defender. He has the size, strength, and leaping ability is defend larger players inside and also the quickness to defend quick wing players. Shon is one of those rare high school talents with the ability to play any position on the court and dominate.

* SHON BRIGGS is an absolute pleasure to watch. Pushing 6-foot-6, he can pretty much score at will but prefers to pass first. Can do it all; great footwork inside, possesses a mid-range game and can knock down the three-point shot as well. The most impressive thing to me is the way he pushes the court from one end to the other and distributes as he received  the “Magic Award” from college coaches for best passer. Also, Shon has a contagious personality and is a pleasure to be around.

+++++

* 5-foot-11 RODNEY POPE 2014 Freedom High/Team Select - Very quick athletic high IQ point guard who has  good shooting ability. Rodney works well off ball screens and in  transition. He showed the ability to pass the ball effectively in  short windows and in traffic and he also has a very effective change in pace  and a explosive first step. Rodney also displayed good fundamentals on defense, playing passing lanes well and when defending on ball. He must be more aggressive throughout the entire game and not just in  spurts. There is no question Rodney has the talent to play the point guard at the next level but he will need drastic improvement physically  in the weight room to have success at the next level. He is Division 2 to low Division 1 player.

*  RODNEY POPE - Rodney is a  GREAT on the ball defender as he seems to always accept the challenge  of guarding the ball up and down the court, which results in many steals and buckets at the other end. He is a seven-footer in a 5-foot-11 body and scores at will from all over the court. He received the  “Buckets Award” from college coaches for best offensive player. Rodney  is one of those silent scorers, where it happens within the flow of the game. Then you look in the box score at the end of the game and  he’s got 30 plus.

+++++

* 6-foot-3 DEJANTE  KENNEDY 2014 Pittsburgh High/Team Select - Very strong, physical combo guard who is a lock down defender. DJ is a solid finisher to the basket in transition and in  the half court set. He has the ability to defend twos, threes and fours and he also rebounds well for his size. DJ still needs to improve his athleticism, quickness and consistent outside shooting but with time and work it will  improve. DJ is Division 2/low major Division 1 player.

* DJ
is probably the best 6-foot-3 PG prospect in the class many coaches have not heard of.

* DEJANTE KENNEDY is a nightmare at the point guard position! At 6-foot-4 and shoulders like  a linebacker, he is pretty much un-guardable by his counterpart. If you play up on him, he’ll blow by you. If you’re on his hip, you’re done (anywhere on the court)! He sees the entire court very well and  can finish. DJ is also a tenacious rebounder as he received the “Sir Charles Award” from college coaches for best rebounder. Needs to polish his jumper.
+++++

* 6-foot-0 TYRUS PETTIS 2015 Heritage High/Team Select - A very long, athletic, high energy combo guard who plays extremely hard on both ends of the floor. Finishes  well at the basket in transition and is very intense on defense. Only a junior, he will need to improve his outside shooting ability and  strength to be considered at the next level.

+++++

* 6-foot-5 LOGAN RODGERS Liberty High - A very skilled solid bodied power forward, he displayed good shooting ability off the dribble and on the catch. Logan also showed briefly the  ability to get to the basket in transition and in the half court set. Continued strength and agility training can develop in to a recruitable prospect at the NAIA level.

+++++

* 6-foot-0 COLE STEVENS 2017 Ripon High freshman point - Cole is an excellent shooter, solid defender, good ball handler and passer.

+++++

* 5-foot-9 JARED RICE 2017 Central Catholic High/Modesto Basketball Club freshman point - Jared is an excellent defender, good ballhandler and passer.

* JARED RICE - Jared is a good point guard with passing skills. He is also a good shooter. He is one who will pass up a shot to hit the open man. He is a solid ball handler and defender. Makes good decisions.

+++++

* 5-foot-11 AUSTIN STILES 2016 Ceres High/Modesto Slam n Jam sophomore combo guardAustin is an excellent defender and rebounder from the guard position, good ball handler and passer.

* AUSTIN STILES - The first thing you notice about Austin when you see him is his fitness. He has a  strong muscular body and is in exceptional condition. As a basketball player, he is very skilled and a fierce competitor. Offensively, he is an excellent ball handler and has great court vision allowing him to find  the open player and deliver the pass. He also has the skill and ball handling ability to take his defender off the dribble and finish from both sides of the basket with his left and right hand. Perhaps his  greatest attribute is his ability to defend as he has the strength and  physicality to defend players larger than him and the quickness and  desire to handle fast and skilled ball handlers. The combination of his  foot speed, conditioning, and tireless work ethnic make Austin very effective in transition. For his age, Austin is way ahead of the game  in basic fundamentals and court knowledge and is a complete player  with a strong desire to get better.

* AUSTIN STILESVery good defender, strong upper body, excellent pull up jumper. He has a strong  move to the basket, is a very good passer and is unselfish, sometimes over passes.

+++++

* 6-foot-2 DRU SOLIS 2016 Concord High/Oakland Soldiers 15 sophomore combo guard - Dru is an excellent scorer from the wing and a solid defender, ball handler and passer

*  DRU SOLIS - a very quick, good defender who gets a lot of steals. Good three point  shooter and nice finisher.

+++++

* 6-foot-2 MICAH ELAN 2016 Lick Wilmerding High/Oakland Soldiers15 sophomore point guard - Micah is an excellent pass first point guard that runs a team very well. He is a solid defender, ball handler and passer and can score for himself when needed.

* MICAN ELAN - A great outside shooter, with a point guard mentality. He makes the other players around him better. Unselfish. Scores in multiple ways. Strong ball handling skills. Excellent leadership traits. Best point guard at event.

+++++

* 6-foot-5 JOE HAMILTON 2014 Central Catholic High/Modesto Slam n Jam - Joe is a hard working, unselfish, competitive team player and an all  around contributor on the court. He passes and rebounds well and plays  sound fundamental hard-nosed defense. Joe's single best skill as a player is his ability to shoot the ball. He has an excellent soft touch allowing him to be a great faceup shooter from short and mid  distances. He also has a great range with his shot allowing him to score consistently beyond the three point arc. Joe has a quick release with his shot allowing him to shoot effectively from a stationary position with very little defensive space. He also has the ball skills and movement along with a nice high shooting release to create his own shot off the dribble. Joe is also a very savvy player with a great  understanding of the game. He moves well without the ball, understands spacing, and always positions himself well to create rebounding and scoring opportunities for himself. Joe is a complete high school player.

*  JOE HAMILTON - Joe is a complete player who does everything well. He sweats basketball IQ  and it’s a pleasure to watch him play. He can stroke it but has a pass-first mentality, always seems to make the right decision, uses his body well and at 6-foot-4, he is a tough guard at any position. The best thing about Joe is that he comes as a package deal with his 4.0 GPA!

* JOE HAMILTON has nice size for a three man and a high basketball iQ and motor.

+++++

 * 6-foot-4 PETER HAMILTON 2016 Central Catholic High/Oakland Soldiers 15 sophomore wing/postPeter is an excellent scorer and rebounder plus a solid defender and ball handler

PETER HAMILTON is a very fundamentally sound player on both the offensive and defensive end of the court. He has the size and strength to compete effectively inside but also has a fabulous shooting touch that enables to score from anywhere in the half court. Peter is very difficult to defend because of his versatility on offense. He has the post-up skills and the ability to play with his back to the basket allowing him to score inside. He also has a nice outside shot with a good high and quick release that allows him to get his shot off with very little space from his defender. He is a consistent shooter from mid-range distances but also has the range to knockdown the three. Defensively, Peter uses his size along with excellent defensive fundamentals to make him a very  effective defender. He is very coachable, a hard worker and very advanced fundamentally for his age.

* PETER HAMILTON - Has three-point shot and ball handling skills of a two or three man. Can run the floor well. Able to score around the basket as  well as mid-range game. Good defender. Pushes the ball up the court  well in transition. Very strong for his age.

+++++

* 6-foot-1 JOVIAN CORMIER 2015 Deer Valley High - Very versatile players with who does everything well. Has only been playing organized basketball for a short time with plenty of
room for growth. Sky is the limit for this kid.

come:

Each region’s four teams will consist of one team in each high school grade level (9th-12th).

*** At the end of the event, an all “NorCal Showcase” team will be named in each grade level as well as a most outstanding player in each grade level.
