A snippet:
"The folly of rewarding A while hoping for B” was written by Dr. Stephen Kerr (not the former college and pro star) in 1975. I remember reading it in school and it made perfect sense to me then as it does now. As coaches, we say we want to build a great program which means a successful team on and off the court full of unselfish, team-oriented successful players.
Yet, we help promote the selfish, “me first” mentality by the recruiting process. A lot of people blame AAU basketball for such issues and they are certainly contributors in some cases. I also hear many coaches talk about the need to “de-recruit” players once they arrive on campus. Perhaps we should be more honest and insistent on the qualities we want during the recruiting process and the results would be better for all involved??
