Dorfman named SCCAL MVP

Aptos High's Ben Dorfman has been honored as the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League Most Valuable Player.

Aptos High’s Ben Dorfman may have missed five games with a knee injury during nonleague play earlier this season, but he returned to the starting lineup just in time for the Mariners’ boys basketball team.

The 6-foot-3 senior forward helped lead Aptos to the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League regular-season title, and league coaches recognized his importance to the Mariners when they named him the SCCAL’s Most Valuable Player in a recent vote.

“He’s our catalyst,” Aptos coach Joseph Smith said. “He’s a guy who his teammates look up to and rely on.”

In 12 league games, Dorfman averaged 12.66 points, 7.42 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 3.3 steals and .83 blocks for the Mariners, who nearly ran the table in the SCCAL. Aptos finished 11-1 in league play — its lone loss coming to San Lorenzo Valley — and earned a share of its first SCCAL title since the 2011-12 season...
