We've all read them. Them being a congratulation to so-and-so for having been hired a la "great hire for Xxxxxx's staff at Xxxxxxx. He knows the West Coast very well."
There's no real bone to pick here, just something to point out. So-and-so may know a certain territory, be well-connected with high school and travel ball coaches but the likelihood of him bringing a five or four-star prospect to his new team which say is in the bottom half of a middling basketball conference are nil.
Being well-allied is not going to overcome the barriers one inherits in taking on a new position. A basketball program's reputation is what it is, insert the lipstick-pig adage here.
What may be beneficial though about a full book of contacts is if high school and travel coaches have a kid who is unknown or under-known (creating a new word here) but possesses a talent level or potential conducive to success in that new coach's specific conference.
