Kenyon Williams, a 6-foot-3 guard from Brookside Christian High in Stockton has committed to Merritt College. He averaged 14.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 3.1 steals an outing this season.
Led by Williams, the Knights concluded the season with an overall record of 26-5, 14-0 in the Central California Athletic Alliance and winners of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V championship.
He's joining a program which finished 12-4 in the Bay Valley League, 25-7 overall and earned a spot in the California Community College Athletic Association Final Four.
Merritt Coach Keenan McMiller spoke about Williams: "Kenyon is a respectful young man who is a solid student. Kenyon wants to get better, he is tough, physical and has a solid skill level. The key for us is to get him the best shape of his life, improve his motor and make him a consistent three- point shooter. I look forward to working with him this season."
So why the choice of Merritt? "I've had good communication with Coach McMiller over a couple of summers," Williams explained.
His best skills? "Passing the ball and scoring." But there are also the elements of command and control. "Growing up, I was always a great leader." In fact, before turning aside football for the roundball, Williams played quarterback.
Asked for some highlights moments from his prep career, he offered two: "in Arizona during a high school tournament, we were playing a San Diego team and up by two. It was crunch time. I had a fastbreak layup and decided to jump and dunk it. That got us going and we won by 15."
The other: "a triple overtime win over Stuart Hall 97-93." That was on March 17 as part of the Division V state championship playoffs and Williams totaled 24 points.
He is looking to major in kinesiology.
