Mims to the Lone Star State

With the interminable delay in hiring someone to head the Cosumnes River College (CRC) men's basketball program, most of the sophomore-to-be student-athletes are moving on in search of greater stability.

One of those, 6-foot-11 center Donald Mims, has made the move to Midland College in Odessa, Texas. After averaging 4.4 blocks a game and shooting 58% on the season, he will redshirt in 2015-16 thus giving him greater time to add weight and strength.

Mims, who will attend the invite-only Jerry Mullens JC Showcase in St. Louis come July, was surprised at the CRC disintegration. "It caught me off guard and it's really disappointing after the season we had."

On the bright side, there are these plusses. "Midland is a D1 feeder school and we don't have a gym -- we have an arena -- with two practice gyms," Mims explained. "There are no bleachers in the arena -- it's all chairs." He's referring to the Al G. Langford Chaparral Center which seats 5,500.

MJC won the national championship in 2007 and finished as the runner up in 2009.

Mims started summer school on Monday. "They really care about academics and offer a lot of help."

As for on the court, "I'll be locked in and bringing CRC here."

It's a pity to see a team which finished 23-8 overall, 12-2 in winning the Big Eight Conference championship self implode but the players are making the best of it.
