Saturday: Yuba 82, Cañada 74

Appeal-Democrat: "After dropping its first game of the season to defending state champion San Francisco City College, the Yuba College men's basketball team quickly turned things around and started racking up wins.

The 49ers saw their strong play continue on Saturday afternoon when they pulled away in the second half for an 82-74 victory over Cañada in the championship game of the Monterey Peninsula College Tournament.

It was the second straight tournament title for Yuba, which won the Allan Hancock Tournament last week in Santa Maria.

49ers coach Doug Cornelius said his team struggled early before taking a six-point lead into halftime. They had to hold off an early second-half run by the Colts before building up another lead that would last the rest of the game.

"These three-day tournaments can be a real grind for the players. The guys overcame some struggles in the first half and finally got some momentum midway through the second half to help come away with the win," Cornelius said.

Jaaron Stallworth finished with 19 points and five assists and was named the tournament's MVP. Jihad Woods notched a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds, Erik Scheive added 16 points and eight rebounds, and Jourdan Johnson finished with 16 points. Woods and Scheive both earned all-tournament honors."
