Assists and turnovers

Ed Isaacson: "The assist alone has become a useless stat. No differentiation between creating a play and just making a simple pass."

Technically, yes. But a pass right on target isn't always a sure thing to an open teammate.

Call it drifting off into fantasyland but shouldn't it be at least an unofficial turnover of some sort when a player is open, but catches an errant pass that throws off his rhythm and he subsequently misses his shot? Or the pass makes it to the intended target but it's slow and the defense recovers and prevents a shot?
