Smith earns First Team honors

Coppin State's Sterling Smith has earned First Team Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference honors.

"...Smith, a 6 foot, 4 inch junior guard, was named to the second team. Cephas, a 5-10 senior guard earned third team honors. All awards were voted on by the conference's head men's basketball coaches and sports information directors.

"It's a great feeling to know that all my hard work is paying off," Smith said. "Although I am happy about this recognition, I'm not fully satisfied because I want to win the championship."

After undergoing offseason surgery, Smith averaged a team-high 14.2 points per game, which was 12th in the conference. In addition, Smith led the MEAC in 3-point field goal percentage (42.9) and was third in 3-pointers made per game (2.6).

During the season, Smith scored in double figures 22 times and hit for 20 or more points seven times, including a career-high 28 against Norfolk State. He had a stretch of eight games from late January to mid-February in which he averaged 21.7 points and shot over 60 percent.

Smith was second on the team and 19th in the MEAC in rebounds per game (5.0). His 1.4 steals per game ranked seventh in the MEAC. He also posted three double-doubles this season and was named MEAC Defensive Player of the Week in late December..."
