Cal Maritime athletics: California Maritime Academy men's basketball coach Bryan Rooney has announced the commitment of Andrew Fitzhugh for the 2015-2016 season.
Fitzhugh joins the Keelhaulers after transferring from Shasta College where he played two years for his father and legendary Shasta coach, Kele Fitzhugh. During his sophomore year, Andrew averaged 6.8 points per game and 2.9 rebounds a game serving as a key team leader for the Knights. Fitzhugh graduated from Enterprise High School in Redding where he enjoyed a successful high school career. As a junior, Andrew averaged 10.5 points per game and helped lead Enterprise to a section championship. During his senior year, he raised his scoring to 11.5 points per game in leading the Hornets to a 26-4 record and a second consecutive section championship. An excellent student in the classroom, Fitzhugh will major in International Business at Cal Maritime.
"I chose Cal Maritime because of the close-knit family atmosphere that I've witnessed and experienced in the times I've met with Coach and the team. Knowing that I will have a promising future in my career through leadership is very exciting. And lastly, the International Business major also intrigued me because who doesn't want to see the world?!" responded Fitzhugh when asked about his decision.
Andrew joins a Cal Maritime basketball program that accomplished its conference record fourth consecutive trip to the NAIA National Tournament after capturing the California Pacific Conference regular season and conference tournament championships.
Coach Rooney commented on the commitment, "This is an excellent day for our program. We are big believers in the importance of culture and family and Andrew fits exactly what we are striving for in those areas. Andrew plays the game with an infectious energy and he has an extremely high basketball IQ. From our past experiences with former Shasta guys (Grant Blaser/Ty Houghton) in our program, we know they have been well coached. We are extremely excited to have the opportunity to work with Andrew and more importantly see the great things he will accomplish on our campus."
