Coates to Montana Tech official

A little late in posting the official Montana Tech signing of Yuba College's Jalen Coates:

"Montana Tech Head Men's Basketball Coach Patrick O'Herron announced the signing of Jalen Coates today. Jalen joins the Orediggers in the fall of 2015 as a sophomore with three years of eligibility remaining.

"We are very excited to have Jalen as a part of our Oredigger family," stated O'Herron. "Jalen is a great fit for our school, community and basketball program. He brings athleticism and a high basketball IQ which are great skills for a point guard. He also has the ability to defend 94 feet and will be able to create easy scoring opportunities for his teammates. What separates Jalen from other guards is his competitiveness as he will do whatever it takes to win."

Coates, a 5-foot-8 point guard, comes to the Mining City after playing his freshman year at Yuba Community College in Marysville, Calif. Last season Coates averaged 10 points and five assists for the 49ers, a team that led the state in scoring with 85 points per contest.

The Sacramento, Calif. native attended high school at Luther Burbank where he led the team to a 20-8 record while averaging 21 points to go along with six assists and three steals his senior year. Coates racked up several awards including conference MVP, First Team All-Sacramento, Third Team All-Northern California and Titan of the Year. Coates also broke the Luther Burbank High School scoring record and was inducted into the Burbank Hall of Fame. Off the court, Jalen also maintained a 3.5 grade point average.

"I chose Montana Tech due to the fact I felt so at home when I went on my visit, clicking with the players and the people of the community," stated Coates. "I had other opportunities to play at a higher level of basketball but I decided to go where I could not only excel as an athlete, but as a student also. I'm looking forward to a few conference championships. Go Orediggers!"

Jalen is the son of Charlton Coates and Natasha Roberts and plans on pursuing a degree in Business."
